Do you need to run in an engine these days...

Post by Red5 »

Appears the jury is still out depending who you speek to.
I'm looking to keep the bike long term, 5-6 yrs prob in excess of 40k miles. supersport 600, prob 675 or cbr600...

Does it really matter, does it really make a difference? Or is it better for the engine to just thrash it from the word go...
Guess the main things long term are oil burning and emissions.

ANyone have any knowledge of it....?

Capt Han Solo.
Don't care who you are, how much you have, how powerful you are. You still sit on the toilet with your pants around your ankles. Yep, it's a level playing field..

The manuals still state to run them in, but I think thats more to cover their own backs. I did read in a bike magazine that a Honda Racing technician advised to use 75% of the rev range straight off, just make sure you warm it up.

Theres also this website: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

You always hear about bikes which have always been trackbikes making the most power, thats because they were thrashed from the go.

Check what the original oil is that's inside the motor, as a lot of new motors arrive in the uk with weak as piss oil in as standard

Track bikes will make more power but wint last long. If you want to do 40k trouble free miles it won't hurt to run it in for the first 600miles would it

Let it rev freely and don't labour the engine at lower revs in higher gears, the ring seal by gas pressure and need to be revved to make this happen correctly, the first 500 miles are the important part, let the motor work without labouring it and use about 75% of the revs available, then drop the oil and filter and check all the clearances and fill with a reasonable quality mineral oil and use for a further 500 miles before dropping the oil and filter again and refilling with a good quality oil. you can then get out and use the last 25% of the rev range.
