Best place for brake pads, and best pads?

Post by VirtualMark »

Hi, I have a CBR600RR and a ZX10R, both need the front pads doing soon.

Firstly, is it a tough job on these? I'll Youtube it at some point, just wondered if anyone knows how involved it is, any special tools or knowledge needed?

Secondly, should I just buy any brake pads, or is it better to get more expensive ones?

Lastly, anyone know the best sites to get them?

Thanks.

depends on your riding, are they just road or track? are you a heavy braker?

the job itself isn't hard, do you have tools? do you have a torque wrench(it's your brakes, best to make sure they are fitted correctly)

youtube isn't the answer to all, just be careful.

Iv always done my own brakes .but billinom8s is wright you need to be thinking about what there used for ie track.road heavy ect and have a tourque wrench great time to insure your calipers are in good condition seals ect .but no fancy trick tools needed .just confidence as they stop you or at least should.

Personally would recommend SBS SP - EVO SINTER

Would not touch EBC personally.

Drop them round to Billnom8s with some new brake fluid and get him to bleed the fluid whilst doing the change. Makes such a huge difference with a great set of pads.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I found pads on lexparts but they're really cheap - £4-£8, seems almost too cheap. OEM pads are 0ver £30, I was hoping for a happy medium, ie a reliable pad that doesn't cost too much.

It's for road use, from what I've read track pads aren't great for road use as they require more warming up?

Billynom8s - thanks a lot for the PM and offer. I'm lucky as my friend has a garage in Dawlish and a ton of equipment so I can do it there, but thanks again.

You can scrimp on some items but I'd suggest brake pads are not one of them......
KTM 1190ADV - sold
KTM 790ADV - sold
KTM 790 Duke - current
Honda CB300R - can I get any smaller 🙄

You're in Dawlish? I'd suggest go into CMS in Exeter, or SP motorcycles, or somewhere like that, not buying on-line. If you prefer the Newton Abbot direction, The Motorcycle Company, on the Olympus Estate opposite B&Q have been good to me.
You might save a couple of quid in the short term, buying online, but it could cost in the long run. If you have problems and bought local, you can go back and talk to the supplier face to face. If you buy on line, it becomes a major issue. Plus, if everyone buys on line, the local places will go out if business which is good for no-one.

Three things on a bike must be in tip top condition and should not be scrimped on in any way - tyres, brakes and rider.

I've heard good reports on the SBS pads Menzies mentions, I fitted EBC but probably wouldn't again. They work fine but don't feel great

I went for SBS HH's for my Aprilia RST 1000. The brakes went from o.k. with a big handfull of lever, to 'kin brilliant with just two finger operation. I'll deffo be putting them on the Triumph asap.

Ok well I called CMS and they have EBC and Brembo. From what I've read most people don't recommend EBC... so I'll probably get a set of SBS as recommended here. Unless anyone has had experience with the Brembos?

They're a bit pricier in CMS too, about £30 per disc so I'd need two packs at £60 for the EBS, and £80 for the Brembos. But if I buy on eBay I can get a pair of SBS Evos for £50.
