gentle and careful use of a blade, taking care not to damage the face.

Which gasket as would use different methods dependant on what it is/how it seals.

Just did an engine casing WD40 breaks down the fibres of the old gasket and a flat screwdriver and a little patience does the rest.you can do plenty damage with a razor blade. What's it for and is it off or on the bike?

Gaskets made in uk before 1986 still contained asbestos, many countries world wide still allow asbestos to be used so be careful when handling damaged gaskets.
