Tyre choice ???

Post by menzies3032 »

Hi all.

Looking for some help and advice. I ride a GSXR 600 K1 and I am a medium to fast road rider that also does a couple of track days a year. I currently have Mitchelin pilot road 2cp that I have managed to ware out in about 6k. I want to try and get something a bit more sticky.

Would appreciate thoughts, preferances and advice on what to go for.

Thanks

If you like the Michelins, try the Pilot Power 2ct's .......

Thanks TLS Moose

I have been looking at the new pilot power 3ct's that have a good write up but concious that I am a bit brand loyal and wanted to get ideas from others that have worked well.

I've got Pirelli Diablo (corsa's) on the TL, and have done for several years now ..... They last around 1700 - 2000 miles, and I find them great for road and the odd trackday.

The MV came with Pilot Powers fitted, and they seem just as good on the road .... But no idea of track performance or lifespan yet ....

TBH, it depends what you are looking for, sticky but long mileage, or short and sweet but sticks like glue?

I can only comment on sport touring tyres as my old Gixxer plus Cornish road surfaces equals quickly worn rubber /:) ..... After just fitting the front ( finally) I'm now running BT-021's, sport touring Bridgestones and I'm really impressed with the improved handling compared to the Maxxis Diamond Backs I was running. I know Goaty can't have a bad word said against them ( Maxxis DB's that is) but I'm totally back on Bridgestones again. I used to always run Bridgestones on my Suzuki, but cost being a big issue, I went to Maxxis. Now they seem to have addressed that a bit, I'm back on them for the foreseeable.

Just my opinion, for proper sticky road and track day tyres ask the likes of Billi, Layne, etc. they have the experience on those type of tyres.

Cut me in half and I'v got Suzuki written right through me!

Got Dunlop sportsmarts on my ten very good tyre duel compound hard in middle sticky on sides. Done two trips to the ring and still got them on :D used to love the Dunlop qualifier rr the same duel compound but seemed stickier on edges but they stopped making them really good could push them to the edge

Just had a BT023(120/70) fitted to the front of mine for £93.50, ( my tyre man reckons the BT021 is now being run out,as the prices have just dropped again),thought I'd have a change from the Michelin PR2 as the 023's seemed softer on the sides than the PR2's and 3's.

There's some good deals to be had on most of the last generation tyres if you shop around (Power pures,PR2's sportsmarts,Power 2ct's etc) and they'd all cope with a trackday or 2 or fast road riding.

Bridgestone bt016 are very good for fast riding, sportier version of the bt021 mentioned above

Had the 016 a few times and they are very good, excellent grip for fast road use and lasted pretty well

Well people thanks for the help and advise.
After much consideration, research and recommendations i have decided to go for Metzeler Sportec M5.
Thanks to S.P.Motorcycles in Exeter had them fitted today then road home in the rain.
After my old Michelin Road Pilot 2ct's the tip in is already a lot quicker and thus far the wet performance has been very planted. Lets hope once I have broken them in they are as grippy as i am hoping. Looking forward to trying to get a bit more lean angle.
