Clean air filter could add 5hp!

Post by Shooey »

Was wondering what difference a new air filter would make for my CBR600RR 2008 and found this video!

On my old K1 600 GSXR i put in a performance air filter and it did make a difference to the mid range power and lowered torque but was great for the top end and helped it pull to red line on the track. What was most noticeable was the improved fuel consumption on track and a big difference.

If your doing it for when your road riding I would suggest you don’t you will use the mid range a lot more then the top end.

If your going track riding then do it and would also suggest a change to chain and sprocket and go -1 front +2 rear. That will give you better acceleration and the bike will be able to breath to top revs :-)

Forgot to mention if your if you do change the sprockets then recommend you get yourself a speedo healer so you still get the correct recording of mileage and speed.

Reference normal service
New oil and filter
New air filter
Iridium plugs
Makes all the differance and helps to keep the older bike running as sweet as a nut

Routine maintenance is always top priority.
At the end of the day the bike should be 100%.

Yep you did!

So I bought a K&N upgrade (not race) and was looking for a video on how to fit and stumbled across this and thought I’d share it.

I was feeling very positive about the whole upgrade and then - conflicting opinions start to emerge!!

Now I’m unsure wtf to do!!

Filter in. You've got a can on.

Leave it at that until you can get a power commander.

Or failing that - as you don't need one. Save the money and put it towards a track Bike.

Do you still have the cat in?

The lambda sensors usually will correct for the extra flow of a race filter without mapping.
If you have removed the o2 sensors or got a faulty one then it could go lean but that is a rare situation.

Every bike comes out of the box lean, you could justify remapping a stock bike but it you fit an exhaust and filter probably best to wait.
To me, you sound like your gonna get a bigger bike anyway.

Your not going to do any damage to your bike by trying it. Fit itnto your bike and then ride the thing and see what you think. As I said further up the thread your probably find you loose some torque at lower revs and gain at higher revs. Try it and see how you get on. You can always swap and put a standard one back in.

A lot depends on the filter fitted as standard ..... many moons ago tests were done by one of the magazines (Motorcycle Mechanics or Performance Bikes?) and the only benefit shown with most "performance" filters was that they are washable/re-usable. In most cases the "performance" benefit was no more than 1 or 2 bhp (have a couple of sausages less at breakfast or have a good poo!) and filtration was actually poorer than OE filters.

In the case of the TL, on the owners forum one guy actually did Dyno tests and the differences amounted to about 1.5bhp. The MV comes with a washable hi-performance foam filter as standard so kind of a moot point there.

You're more likely to get a better benefit cleaning plugs, oiling chain, changing engine oil more often (a cheap oil changed frequently is better than expensive oil changed rarely) and checking valve clearances.

Also, beware anything that actually could allow gasses to pass through an engine quicker/in greater volume - lean off the mixtures and you could melt your engine ......

5th gear did a test on a Golf VR6 and proved it did a quicker 0 - 100mph having only change the engine oil.
Only 0.5 second though.

The KTM 990 LC8 engine does benefit from a filter change, but it's a little more than that, it's a whole air box replacement. I guess it has a restrictive air box as standard. The replacement looks like a hot rod car filter.

So it's the airbox, not the filter, that is the cause of the restriction? The same applies to the TL. The tower where air is taken between the cylinders and up into the airbox is only 2/3rds the available opening size moulded into the box, so the trick is to do a bit of plastic surgery and open it out ..... hence once again it's not the filter that is restrictive but the plumbing of the route to it .... changing a filter will have no effect on this
