Get a cheap one that make a noise, any thachum aproved ones won't justify discount/costs
I had an abletronics one which cost £600 fitted, great alarm, very reliable etc etc but just wasn't worth the discount
Now i got a cheapy £20 one of ebay, it'll wake me up if some one trys to nick my bike in the middle of the night

I have a system 4 and it only cost me £250 and that was including fitting. I dont know if i save money on isurance, (proberly would as I have only been riding 1 1/2 when I got the ZX6R. But due to my job as a youth worker I wanted extra security to frighten the young people away

Here's 'Toby'...
yeh, im was looking to alarm my new DRZ 400 SM, i was gonna get that data tool, but just baught one of those shotty little mini moto alarms for 14 squid. puts out 112db and is very easy to install. i have locks on the bike all the time anyway. only problem is locks dont make noises. so wanted something to wake me if my bike moved outside my house. so got one of this little ones. will let u peepes know how it goes. ;) thanks for all ur input.
Thanks

Might be worth making sure any alarm has an immobilisor, something like a DRZ is going to be popular for some chav to take to rag around the field. If they can't get it started, they are not going to have a van etc to heave it into (ie if it were an MV a theif would look at transporting it away rather than doing the ignition socket in to ride it away).
Alarm probably won't make much difference to the insurance, whereas on a R1/GSXR/Blade an alarm makes a difference between an insurer insuring you or not.
Fit the alarm for your own peace of mind - sounds like you're doing as much as you can, also look for one that has a low battery drain rate as I imagine the DRZ has a small battery.

If you get an alarm, get a META.
Had 2 cheap alarms. There're ok untill the thing doesn't disalarm. Better off without.
Datatools are just bloody anoying because if left they alarm themselves. So to do anything to it you have to put it into maintainance mode so the bloody thing bleeps at you all the time. They are also very sensitive, even on low setting, so a gust of wind will set it off.
METAs will only imobalise themselves if left. They only alarm as well when you press the botton.
With most modern bikes you can buy the connection wires for Datatools and METAs so they litraly just plug in to the bikes loom.

Buy a cheap and noisy alarm, and with the money you saved buy an Almax chain and squire padlock, and use that to fasten your bike securely to mother earth.
Expensive alarms are no more effective and you'll never get the money back in reduced insurance premiums.
Best alarm going is also the cheapest, for those keeping the bike in the garage or shed. Buy a baby monitor, baby bit in shed next to bike, parent bit by your bed. Anyone goes in overnight you'll know about it.

you can put the datatools onto 'valet' mode. alarm doesnt go off when moved, just when u try n start it. doesnt beep at you either !
i had an acumen alarm on my zxr and on the R1 for a bit, dodnt cost much but was bloody loud. its in a bag in the garage right now if u wanna put an offer on it.
