Can't believe you've wrote the gorge off as crap, then included the B3139 and A371 which is 80% 30mph limits and Draycott Steep which is very much a single track road which probably now has gravel and mud everywhere and potholes about 6 feet deep.

Thanks for the input and advise guys. I think the gorge can be great when it's not full of tourist traffic, but Cheddar village is crap. My original suggestion was based on what we did last year. I haven't lived in the environs for decades so appreciate suggestions from you who're currently more aux fais with north Somerset to make for a better ride. How about this loop:-

We could start the loop from The Ploughboy Inn, BA5 3ET as a few of us will be coming up from the south.

Those of us coming from nearer the equator could meet at the services off M5 jcn27 or Tivvy McDonalds. It should take us about 1.75 hours to get to The Ploughboy from there along this route:-

Been talking to Mellow Yellow for the North Somerset loop, he's got a cracker of a bimble for us up there with a decent lunch stop.

Start will be Tiverton McDonalds, meet 08.30 to leave 09.00

We'll avoid the main roads as far as possible to meet Mellow and the northern contingent. It should take us about 1.75 hours to get to the meeting point at the Cannards Well Inn at Shepton Mallet using this route:-

Depart Cannards well Inn (BA4 4LY) 11.00 where Larry will take us on the magical mystery tour of the combes finishing at the Ploughboy Inn for the ride back down south for those of us nearer France.

Pace will be "brisk", not 125 slow but not breakneck either.

My section is approx. 60 miles and will terminate at Sheppun Malleh, very close to the start.

There will be a fuel stop not far from the start, and lunch about half way.

I should be good for this one. Will probably join in the fun at the Eagle Tavern - around 9.30-ish?
Just a word to the wise, there used to be an active Gatso on the A37 immediately after descending Wraxall Hill, northbound. I haven't been that way in yonks so don't know if it's still there, or active.

Where does this ride actually start from or is it a sort of relay?

It's a mini relay Jim.
Brian's kicking it off by leading some of Devon & Somerset's finest from Mc D's in Tiverton at 0900 hrs and handing on the baton to Larry and his Brissle mob at Canard's Well (used to be Canards Grave you may remember) on the A37 near Shepton Mallet around 1100rs.

The old inn sign was a man on the gallows. PC brigade had it changed.

Also The Highwayman Inn next door.

No longer there. None of the old Gatsos are live in Somerset, and haven't been since they turned them off in about 2011. Just a few of the new digi ones to look out for and the mobile units (vans and bikes)
