Bike cams

Post by 50something »

Looking at possibly investing in a camera for the bike, mainly for any track days i may do. For a couple of reasonable bikes that i hope i can put through their paces and keep up so would like to film the occassions

Looking at the gopro 8 with race technology software update or the 360 max which are reasonably priced but still not cheap or the AIM smarty cam and solo 2 data logger which is very nice but not cheap

Anybody used any of these or any advice

I would highly recommend the GoPro. However my advise (as I did a lot of research on this myself) is not go for the brand new product unless there is a specific feature that you are really after on the new model that is not on the older model. The GoPros have advanced over the years but actually if you go back a few models then the quality that you get for a reduced cost is absolutely fantastic.

I have got a GoPro Hero 5 Black and I would highly recommend it. It will record in 4K if you want it to however I find for track use 1080 more then enough to give HD quality, you can control it from the app if you want by wifi, there are voice commands for most actions (take a photo / start recording etc) there is also single button that i use all the time when on track so you just push a single button and it will turn on and then start recording which is great as your just heading out on track. There is motion stabilisation that works very well for motorbike recording and there is also sound setting for stereo (for vlogging) or wind (which is mono and cuts wind noise). Also water proof to 10 meters. Very impressed with mine.

Check out my youtube channel (link in my signature) anything for the last year or do is on the go pro. This vid is not a bad one to look at for colour and quality as well as how the camera has handled wind and engine noise. The camera was mounted on the front of the bike on the nose in front of the screen without any wind protection. https://youtu.be/RixBlQLTSgg

I have an amazon affiliate code for the Hero 5 Black if your interested in getting one
https://amzn.to/34heukm

Only bad thing i would say about it is it's not great at all at recording in the dark. You can play with the settings to try and improve it but i have never really got a good setting.

I would also suggest getting at least a 64Gb memory card (and make sure its the correct one that can handle the data stream else it will fail) and also get yourself free video editing software called VSCD as its easy to use and fantastic.

Hope this helps

I haven't filmed anything on a bike yet but used to have an old db5000 which was a cheap copy gopro and recently bought an early model Gopro session as they are super light and can be mounted in pretty much any orientation on your chest/upside down inside a car, on your helmet etc etc.

Sound quality seems decent on the session too for such a small camera but haven't tried many others so difficult to compare. Only used mine inside/on my car at drift days but will be sticking it on the tank for my first bike track day in June :-bd

Cheers

I was talking above about SD cards and getting the right card for the camera so that it can handle the data dump whilst recording at quality. These are my 2 SD cards

Top card = Good
Bottom card = Bad and not good enough

I am using a GoPro Hero Black 5 for the forward facing and Shooey is using a Go Pro Session on the back of his bike rear ward facing. A point we both learned from the day is getting the focus setting correct is important. As I looked like i was mm from Shooey but using the other camera at the same time i look miles back. Better to go for a narrower setting rather then a wide one.

Think I might have missed something here... But how come? I like this point of view:

So which of them was actually realistic distance wise do ya think?

They stopped allowing cameras on tanks and even on your person a few years back. You can mount them on the fairing front and rear, brackets etc but just not tanks.

I think it's due to the tank being in your immediate impact zone.

I like this video Rob, shame you didn’t keep the rear pointing camera in shot a bit more when editing and switch between the two. #goodtimes

I like this view too. Will be mounting mine somewhere on this side of the screen for a few sessions this year.
