Is your bike cleaner/de-greaser too aggressive?

Post by Jug »

Bennetts Social have done some tests on loads of products and the results were surprising.

I'm fond of the Screwfix one for seriously greasy areas but in recent years I have got a bit free with it and now think nothing of doing the whole engine, swing arm and rear wheel with the stuff. I spray it on at 100% concentration but at least wet the area down first. It is also only on there for a minute at the most.. but still..

Check it out and see how your favourite cleaner fared..

Full write up here or just watch the vid.

Pretty scary.
Have to say I use a combo of water, then muc off, water again with a sponge. Then demon shine snow wash. Gets most me it clean.
When I want to go to town on it i'll use Auto glym on the Wheels and a carnauba wax on the rest.
Brings the Bike up lovely.

Yeh, after watching that my Screwfix No Nonsense degreaser will be reserved for just occasional use around the front sprocket region. I mainly run engine oil as a chain lube anyway so clean up isn't much of an issue.

Before that my go to was WD40 to cut the grease, which is what I mainly use for the rear wheel in between full cleans anyway, so I'll just go back to using now that as I've got loads of it already.

I use chainsaw oil in my drive chain oiler. As for general cleaning I think I'll stay with rinse, MucOff, Fairy liquid in hot water, final rinse and blow dry though I'll stop using sponges and get some soft brushes to go with the toothbrushes I use on the niggly bits. And I know it's a faff but you should take the panels off any faired bike now and then to clean behind.
old and disgraceful so doing what I can while I can before I can't

I've got a full set of those brushes he was using, the Vikan ones, though mainly just use the red & green long handled ones.
Got them about a year ago and they are so handy for bike cleaning, might get some more as the bigger one is getting a bit beaten up now.

I find that if you don't use them, they don't get dirty, so avoiding the need for aggressive cleaning chemicals ......

On the rare occasion cleaning is necessary, muc-off generally works for me with a squirt of brake & clutch cleaner quickly wiped off for really stubborn gloop :-bd
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....
