Best routes and sights in the SW?

Post by DaveH »

Hi all

A few mates of mine from up country are looking to do a 5-6 day tour of the SW over Easter and I’ve been asked to help put the route together.

The current thinking is a loop from Somerset, down through Devon and Cornwall and back.

Any suggestions for must ride routes and must see sights? Oh and Biker-friendly accommodation en-route!

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestions ... please keep ‘em coming folks.

I’m reasonably ok on Somerset as I used to live near Taunton (I’m thinking Cheddar, the Mendips, the Levels, Haynes Museum, Lyme Regis, West Bay, Exmoor, Dunster etc.) but I don’t know Devon so well and (though I’m embarrassed to admit it) I’ve never been to Cornwall on my bike!

all god suggestions there, theroad from Padstow to Newquay is a good un on a bike provided there are not to many grockles around , th A 39 after Bideford to Bude and down to Wadebridge is pretty good to get you there , Exeter to Torrington (2 or 3 routes all of them not bad) Grub van on Torrington common is collectio point for bikers then Bideford . Right i just did all that backwards

You can do Cornwall in a day.

Depends on how many pubs you stop in.

Think RTTB, there, round and back in 12 hours :)):

You gotta take in Porlock hill , I was up at Princetown once with a bunch of adventure bikers they where heading back north and going via the A39 , and had spent the previous evening winding poor Sharrie up about Porlock , she eventually came to me and said , youre local Merv is it that bad , I said no you will be going down take your time and dont let anyone make you go faster than you want to

From Exeter do the A377 to Copplestone, then turn off heading west past North Tawton to Hatherleigh, Pick up the A386 to Bideford. You then have 3 choices
1) Turn left on the A39 which is a great road all the way down and into Cornwall where yo can pick up a Cornwall route (Badger or Jay are your men for that) I would recommend a stop on Boscastle and food at "The Riverside" hotel

2) Go right on the A39 then pick up the A377 and come back down to where you started.

3) Go right on the A39 to Barnstaple then follow A39 up to Lynton (stop to look at the view) follow the road to Dunster you can then either:-
(A) continue on this road to Bridgewater and link up for a route in somerset (Smiler can help)
(B) Do a right and come back down the A396 through Tiverton and continue back to Exeter

Dave I see that you know Dorset area east from Exeter so once you have finished one (or all) of the above you could follow the A3052 once back in Exeter to get you through Lyme Regis to West Bay.

Torrington to Launceston A388 or turn right @ Holsworthy and head to Bude then left @ Red Post to Launceston. black cat to South Molton absolutey. Tiverton to South Molton via Rackenford is fun too. Any of the roads from Tavistock out towards Liskeard are a hoot.
