racechrono and gps recievers

For those gadget people out there,
Want to use race chrono a bit more next year but would like it to be more accurate than the 1hrz that the phone uses.

Lots of people say use a bluetooth gps receiver of 5 or 10hrz and would like to know a few more details on these.

What do people use and does it make a real difference.

10 would be better but all the times I used one it wasn't that hot

I know that Mr Moo bought one Last year to take with him on some trackdays. He left it in my garage a while back, it's a 10 Hz unit, don't think he had any problems with it.

It's Bluetooth linked to your phone.

I am concious that people have tried to use phones with RaceChrono without a lot of success however I have used old Samsung tablets (tab2) (now very cheap) with great success.

Just a thought.

Mark I like the look of that but bit more than I wanted to spend but will keep an eye out for a 2nd hand one.

Menzies I see where your coming from but have no seat unit or anything to hold a tablet or anything need something fairly small to have in leathers or bike mounted.

Depends how accurate you want/need. 5Hz updates 5 times a second, so every 200ms but the software will (for choice of a better word) guess the rest so still fairly accurate. 10Hz is every 100ms.

Qstarz 818X is the one I have had for a fair few years now. 5Hz and has never let me down. They also do 10Hz versions too. You can get other unknown brands on eBay that state they're 5Hz, but like anything from China on eBay, its best to do your home work and check reviews to make sure it actually does!

As for Racechrono itself, you dont need a all singing top of the range phone. I use an 4 year old HTC DesireS and does the job perfectly, check out eBay or alternatively you can buy fairly good Android phones for about £50 brand new these days.... just make sure it has bluetooth... also older phones tend to be smaller.

I had a cheap phone of eBay which worked really well. I had a GPS thing too but it never really seemed to work. I would get stupidly fast lap times or none at all. the issues may have been at the track as I wasn't the only person having problems.
This issue and the fact Your not allowed them, I Decided to buy a built in one. Starlane do a few but not cheap.
Still got the phone and GPS tho f. Anybody want it then it's free!

I use a qstarz 818bt with my phone. Just hide both under pillion seat. Worked brilliant at Portimao but not so good at Silverstone. Not sure why :-/ But apart from that is a good setup. Think I paid 50 quid for it. Hth

Dataloggers aren't allowed at Trackdays. If they find it, they'll kick you off.

If you want to know if you are improving, zero the trip meter at the start of each session.
If you want to know your top speed, download digihud from Google play.
If you want to know lean angle, download the Pirelli Superbike app.

You won't get any hassle with these, or you can try downloading racechrono. It's good.
