Dying laptop

Post by billinom8s »

Hey there.

My laptop has decide it's got bored with working properly and is now working with a pace of a snail. It also likes freezing up and shutting down.

Does anyone know where I can take it around the Exeter/Newton/torquay area please? Need it fixed armed running ASAP.

Thanks

Running windows?
Have you tried all the standard stuff?
Clear prefech folder
Msconfig - untuck all startup items ( should disable services in anything after XP but it will still suffice)
Boot into a different user and run an anti malware ( gets around some lockout bugs)
Or just pop it over here an I'll learn ya  :D

If any of what forestcat suggests sounds a bit scary don't be afraid to run CCleaner (free and safe) which will do some of it for you and help with other bits. It often happens with older versions of Windows just because of time and the accumulation of debris but shouldn't happen so much from Windows 7 on. Also maybe try full scans with a different anti virus program and (as said) an antimalware program. Don't Google to find those though as many of the top results are malware themselves.

I like Kaspersky's Rescue disc even though they can't spell disc properly. It has fixed some problems others failed to fix. You boot to it as a different operating system which can be confusing but allows it to really rummage through Windows. As long as you stick to the scans you cannot do any damage. Avast, Avira, F-prot, AVG and many more also offer free AV and should be safe.

Couple of years ago, mine was going berserk. Twas late at night and I feared a virulent bug. Was opening pages, throwing lines, offering to do weird things.

I'd had a glass or six and gave up. Turned it off and went to bed. Next day, investigations eventually found the cause.

A wine-soaked crisp was holding the <control> key down permanently !!! #-o
