2019 Track Day Review

Post by menzies3032 »

Well as it is now cold and wet I felt it was time to go through all of my videos of this year and remind myself of my track day joys and what I managed to achieve in 2018. If there is one thing that i have learned it is having a half reasonable action camera to capture everything is a must. Not only for improving your riding, reminding you of how well / bad you have done but also means you can look back and remind yourself on lap times.

Personally I use a GoPro Hero 5 Black 1080, 50fps

OK I started the year on the 3rd of April at Oulton Park. It was 2 degrees and pissing it down with rain. However for the 1st time ever I did a wet track day (which i never do) however in this vid I do nearly have an off as the rear lets go 2:00 into the vid. Rather proud that i survived the day

Next onto Cadwell Park on 29th April and this time the sun was out and full fun could be had. Had a great day continued to learn the track and managed my best time up until that point which was a 1:53. A special thank you to Sam "Shammy" Rowlands who is in this video showing me some lines which helped me to get my quickest time

Next onto Donnington on the 21st May. This is the 1st time i have ever been to Donnington and have to say it take me a while to get my head round the track but what a great track looking forward to going back next year. In this video keep and eye open for our own Nick "Red5" Parks at 6:45 also had a good battle with a ZX10 that concluded 10:20 with a cool overtake. Was happy with my first time efforts getting a lap of 1:55

Next, time to head back to Cadwell Park. Again some sun shine but this was a different day as myself and Paul "Shooey" Shoobridge went together. This day was not about me it was all about Paul and I planned out a day of training for the day and spent the day following Paul to record his every move (or as much as i can. In this video we see Paul do a 1:53 (which if you look back to my personal best from April is a hell of a time) and this was 12 seconds better then he had ever done before (at that point) so we mist have done something right. Love the multi camera view for the forward and backward view.

Then time to head back to Oulton Park on 7th July. This was the first time that I had gone to a track (thats not Llandow) and gone into fast group. It was clear that I had moved onto a group that I wanted to say in, but the energy levels needed to be on it through every corner and everywhere on track for 20 minutes are is so much more difficult then the usual 100% back to 75% back to 100% that i am used to in Inters. The one thing that I did notice on this day is how much closer everybody gets in fast group (as per 6:09) take a look

Then back to Cadwell Park for the 3rd time in the year. This day was fantastic. On the last session i had the best ride I had ever done, managed to learn off a faster rider and hunted him down for the entire session. Then as he pulls into the pitts early I then manage to zoom off with a clear track in front of me and set my quickest time ever 1:45.5 which if you consider my previous best earlier in the year of a 1:53 I am massively happy about.

To finish the year it was to Pembrey, I have been to Pembrey a lot of times but this time was different. I felt totally at home in fast group was gliding in and out of other riders. Grinding a knee like never before. Was also great to be there with some friends again. In this video see Shooey back on track this time from the start of the vid through until 7:05 then look forward to the 16:00 mark where we get to see Gareth "Gee" Palmer

Unfortunately Llandow and a trip to Oulton Park got cancelled due to pooring rain which is a shame else there could have been another 2 days added to this list.

What a year on track. The Triumph 765 from Small Boys Track hire bikes was a great bike. However looking forward to 2020 and the new ZX6 bikes that they have for next year.

Hope you enjoy the clips above and if you are interested in getting a decent GoPro the do recommend this one as he video stabilisation feature is fantastic and it is no where nears as expensive as the new hero 7 or 8's
