Oulton Park 7th August

Post by menzies3032 »

Hi All

I have just booked up to go to Oulton Park on Wednesday 7th August.

On the pricy side at £175 for the day but such a great track had to have one more going at trying to ride it in the dry (rather then my other 2 attempts this year when it has been pissing it down with rain)

So at last this year i managed to make it to Oulton Park and it didn't rain \:D/ :-bd

Was a great day and the first time (other then at Llandow) that I have moved up to fast group for what i would consider a proper track (i.e. BSB race on it) there were 3 things that i took away from the day.

1) Fast group is now the right group for me. I over took some people but most people were overtaking me however I felt comfortable and several times throughout the day there was close track time around multiple bikes where we were all ish the same pace and same line and it all felt good. (before i did crap in a tight corner and then they buggered off)

2) It is totally knackering.... every single lap every single corner i was totally on it.... absolutely no rest and after the second session i was so knacker and covered in swet i was ready for bed let alone another 5 sessions :-o

3) Overtaking in fast group is A LOT closer then in novice and inters. I wouldn't say it is dangerous as every single overtake was very quick and done with meaning and did not push me off line. but bugger me it was close

Which leads me on to ask a question to all the fast group track day riders and racers on this form..... Is what I have experienced normal? Should I expect this at every track day? or did I just got to Oulton Park when there was a load of racers there practicing and they got closer then usual?

Below is links to videos of the day. if you watch the 1st session after the sighting laps (so from 8:00 on wards) and the second session you get the idea.

1st session = https://youtu.be/qYQZu_8hEsM
2nd session = https://youtu.be/sHi0gBmXlVg
3rd session = https://youtu.be/I6G82N3Vv68
4th session I have not put the video on Youtube as got a bug in the middle of the camera and had to come into the pits due to bike issues

Were a lot of the other bikes obviously race bikes, and were there a number of race team vans and trucks in the paddock? BSB go to Oulton for the opening showdown round so it's possible that a number of them were there practising for that. Three years back (in fact I think that a bunch of SWB guys made the same trip) we did a double-header at Cadwell in early August and the stock 600 and 1000 guys were there in force, and I've never felt so slow in my life... I chatted to Levi Day, as they were parked opposite us in the paddock, and apologised if my Super Duke had got in the way at any time, to which he replied "no worries mate, your lines are good and predictable, unlike him (indicating the bike belonging to one of our party), he's all over the fecking place" :)) :)) :))

I wasn't conscious that there were specific race teams there and looking at the bikes and the leathers it wasn't shouting out race bikes.... i think it was just a quick group. As you will have seen in some of the vids (eg second session) there were groups that i managed to tag onto for a while (half a lap) and even the odd bike that i managed to over take.

However the boys that were coming through were really coming through and zoomed through and were gone within 1 corner. I was just a little surprised at how close the overtaking was..... but no accidents and everybody stayed upright and actually we didn't have a red flag all day so cant have been too bad

The fast folk at Oulton are fast!
How did you manage a day at Oulton with no red flag in fast?!?! I can’t remember the last time that happened.
Not watched all the vids as working lots but you will find passes are closer but generally safer, just don’t book anything pre-race meet if your not so keen on that happening or you will really find out what a close pass is 😂
