Recommendation for billinom8s motorcycle work
Hi Guys,
Had my GSXR worked on by billinom8s last weekend. No, not crashed it again, previous garage had stripped the sumps thread for the sump plug. He fixed the issue, changed the oil/filter plus did some ancillary work on the bike.
Did a great job at what I thought was a reasonable price, much lower than my local bike shop. If I lived closer I'd ask him to do all the servicing on my bikes.

Did Billi helicoil it or do it some other way?

No Helicoils were used in the fixing of this gixxer.

Got to be said that Si is rather good at the spanner work.
I have not bothered even getting my hands dirty for years just give him a call and let him go to town.
Has always been a top job at a great price......

Rethreaded oversized probably using one of the sump saver kits available.
Did one for red 5 a few years back, (plus loads of Peugeot and vag group ones)
Since alloy sumps becoming common happens more and more.
Wouldn't use a helicoil on a sump as cant guarantee that that oil wouldn't seep through either of the threads.

I would as it's the crush washer that forms the seal (between the sump bolt and the sump casing), or the Oring on more modern sump bolts, not the thread.
The only thread type that is considered as sealing would be a tapered thread.

I know the crush washer in theory should but if you helicoil it with the original washer would it be the correct size to cover the helicoil also??
But then again at times everyone can repair stuff differently and in my opinion I like having as minimal amount of failure points as possible.

Helicoil is pretty much the standard repair for trail bikes, that have had a gorilla for a previous owner, do an oil change.
No issues with the sealing washer size as it's normally way bigger than the thread.

Given how thin sumps can be, I'm surprised you can get a helicoil to stay in. I've had better success with timsert ..... Indeed the TL has had one in the sump for around 10yrs now. The joys of vertically split crankcases .....

Wasn't a helicoil. It was rethreaded to a larger size and a hex bolt now.
I knackered the thread on a gex550 sump years ago. Took the pan off and got it helicoiled but didn't really want a helicoil for the gsxr on account of it's hard enough staying right way up without spreading oil...
