I'd really like to clean my headers back to shiney stainless but I'm too chicken to take them off - can't be dealing with broken studs just for the sake of a clean up.
990 SD btw so the back one is pretty hard to get at, but not impossible.
This is current state of them, so there is long way to go....

This may sound crazy but start (once they are clean) with diet cola and aluminium foil. The cola is just to make the flow of whatever particles it is work better and the idea is the oxygen which has bonded with the steel moves to the more reactive aluminium. In theory no effort would be required but I think aluminium foil is coated with something so I found you need to rub but not too hard.
The best bit is that you are not rubbing away rust you are removing oxygen and leaving the original metal. It's not perfect because any deep spots will still be there but it did wonders on my 20 year old down pipes which I had assumed were beyond reclaiming.
I used the cheapest value diet cola and whatever foil we had in the kitchen (at first as I used a whole roll and more). I just wetted the foil and rubbed then wetted it again until it was clearly useless.

Alli foil - I already use that for de-rusting chrome, and it even works on chrome'd plastic!
I just use water with it.
Never tried it on the exhaust but once I get going on this I'll be trying everything, and getting more aggressive with each treatment.
I have used scotchbrite in the past but have found that with scratch the pipes surface.

My pipes were chromed originally but all that was left seemed to be steel which is why I thought of it. No guarantees but like you sat start gentle and then progress to the angle grinder.

Just take the pipes off & run them on a polishing wheel - you'll need to take the pipes off sometime to replace the rear joint gasket as they always go.

I'm afraid I can't remember the name of it, but there is a product made for Harley's that's a chemical embedded cloth tape/ribbon that works well.

Hi Nige, fancy bumping into you on here!
Being a Ktm I'm pretty sure the exhaust will come off all on it's own soon enough. The bolt for the lower (or middle) bracket was missing when I bought her.
Rich.
