Post by Dave »

I need to do some serious metal polishing on the beloved.

Anyone got any decent tips on how to do this, & what tools I need.

Polishing? You call that dirt?

Hmmm, well I find the Autoglym range quite good for getting crap off. You can probably just use soapy water on that though: cheaper and it'll be fine.
Elbow grease will be needed either way. Brush (stiff) may be useful.

Is that water pump leaking?

Either use Autosol and a rag or buy one of those polishing kits... Both these are availible from CMS in Pinhoe.

The worst thing is the bolts on it, they've had salt & oil stuck on them for around 10 months, they're not rusting, but it would be nice if they looked in better condition.

For a bike that's just over 12 months old, it's a bit tatty compared to alot

muck off by Dr x. I use it and it is very good. And you know I hate cleaning my bike.
Then use Scotoil 365 not that cheap but once again very good.

If you need to do some metal polishing let me know as You can use my mops and soaps.

Muck off, like ^^^

Autoglym degreaser. Its quite good

Autoglym bike cleaner is ok.

wd40 is amazing for getting chain lube (even the proper nasty stuff) off. Probably be ok for a bit of oil as well. Good for lube on wheels.

Sorry, did you want to bling bling polish it, or just clean it up?

yeh thats what I was wondering. I wouldnt polish it back to mirror finish it'll be a nightmare to keep looking good with you being an all weather type person.

Id just go for Autosol a rag and elbow grease.

Some kind of Muck Off spray, Lots of rags followed by some autosol (Great stuff). That'll get it as good as new.

Just clean it more often, Once a week or so.

Like Claud 14.7 to 1 said, WD40 is amazing stuff, so many uses, it'll clean almost every type of crap off!

Autosol is only good if you do it properly, otherwise, make sure to have fully buffed all the cream out for excellent shine. To get a nice polished look invest in a cheap power drill (like something from Trago Mills) and a polishing kit from M & P it works absolute wonders, I've polished my link pipe, exhaust bracket and rear hangers and comes out really good.

Scotoiler FS365 will apply a thin protective layer over the metal, but you could always clean laquer anything that you polish up good just to keep it looking good.

If there's one thing I learned about this, it's to keep your bike clean.

I let alot of the nuts bolts & parts get corroded by winter riding.

All it really needed was a quick spray with WD40 then a rinse.
The corrosion is now impossible to polish out & it'll mean replacing alot of the nuts.

Luckily some of these are available from Probolt etc. But alot of them I'm gonna have to leave as they are

I used some stuff called GUNK, spray on, leave for 10 mins, wash off. Nice 'n' easy :) My bike hadn't had a decent clean in god knows how long, i've had her a year now. I used scotch brite on nuts and bolts came up a treat. Depends how much effort you want to put into it.
