Broadband Test

Post by Mike Daytona600 »

http://gadgetshow.five.tv/jsp/speed_test.htm

I saw this on The Gadget show and as I'm bord I decided to try it. I should get up to 8 Mb. When I put the curser on the 2 little computers on the bottom right of my screen it says 6.4Mb.

When I did the test it was just over 2.5Mb download, unfortunatly it wouldn't do the upload so I clicked on a link beklow the test

Check out my crap results.

It's actually 20Mbit but speedtest never shows my full speed, even though I normally download stuff at full speed.

A friend who owns a computer company told me that the upload rate is a fraction of download rate.

That’s why Torrent software takes chunks of data from different subscribers to feed/upload it to an end user – cant remember the exact rates or why - had fallen to sleep by then.

Can I play Gears of War with my Xbox at these rates? Can they go better with a new router?

For most people, unless on cable, it is pointless buying "mega-meg" packages ....

It matters not one jot what the ISP can provide speed wise, it is all about what equipment your local BT exchange has in it :?

When going over to broadband a couple of years back, first off we had to wait for BT to put the right equipment in the local exchange, then when it was done they said the very best it would be able to handle was 2meg, and no more. they also said there were no plans to upgrade for the forseeable future

So no matter what your ISP says they can provide "speeds up to ....", you need to check with BT what your exchange can handle.

Cable, of course, is a different story ... but there are no plans for that to be provided around here

your results look okay to me my lot talktalk were quoting up to 8 meg but your never get that over a bt line. it's all to do with how close u r to the exchange.

Yes.

You have a router already? Not really any point in buying another. There isnt going to be any difference you would notice.

Check on the same site, for BT phone socket wiring
If you have the older socket like me, theres a tip for wire removal which helps the line.
