I have had news that the hosting company that this site is on are making some upgrades to all their servers.
Our current server is running PHP4, and MySQL4, they are upgrading to PHP5 and MySQL5.
The main problem we have is with the MySQL upgrade (this is the database where everything is stored), although the actually data is the same and does not changed, the way that database queries from mutilple tables are different. Which will mean alot of errors.
There is a new version of the forum software available that is phpBB3 where this is version 2. The new version is built for PHP and Mysql5 and should run alot quicker, however any add-ons will then have to be added on at a later date.
Although no data will be lost, what do you all think we should do?
Upgrade to the safest program or wait and see what happens after the upgrade and see if we can fix it then.
The thing I am worried about is that I have read that phpbb2 is not secure on PHP/MySQL5.

Well its rumoured not to be, and you could host from home on a nasDave wrote:I have had news that the hosting company that this site is on are making some upgrades to all their servers.

to host from home would mean a dedicated server, because the server runs apache it would mean linux/unix as windows apache is far to unsecure, then theres the problem with bandwidth. I would probably need a dedicated line (around the lines of SDSL or bonded ADSL to cope with the upload speed).
So to be honest, it is cheaper for me to host it with another company than it is by myself.
The backup situation is ok, I generate weekly backups anyhoo so we always have a recent copy.
I know for a fact that the photo album will not work without alot of modifying.
I do have a test server at home so can start building now anyway, I will have a bash at making my own photo album for the site and see how it goes, if it works then I can use that.
Will keep you all updated.

php3 has some great additional features, more 'user' friendly for forum users and seems to have had most(all) the bugs sorted now - upgrade.Dave wrote:to host from home would mean a dedicated server, because the server runs apache it would mean linux/unix as windows apache is far to unsecure, then theres the problem with bandwidth. Backups - only weekly backups!!! Surely the hosting company should be backing up at least once a day?!
Photo Albums - SmugMug is great, FREE for non-profit/charity organisations
