Is Teignmouth really that far ?

Post by billinom8s »

recently we have been having some changes done in the house, plastering, plumbing etc and that has meant a need to get hold of trademen and get rid of furniture.

How many fooking lazy ass b'stards who obviously have way too much work on are there ? We must have called at least 5 chippies and sparkies to come and quote for doing the work - alot of work and you always get the same response - oooo, yeah, I don't go to Teignmouth, it's too far. Really, T'mouth is too far from Exeter - IT'S 14 FOOKIN MILES !
Is that really too far or do you have so much work on that the commute would just be a toll on your vehicle that it's just not used too ?

Also , we advertised stuff for free - yes free, taker collects. it's not that complicated, you come and get it from my house if you want it and you take it away, FOR FREE.

So why am i getting calls from people asking for it to be delivered or people saying, nah mate T'mouth is too far from Exeter for me, i'll leave it. Tell me, is there a sign as you leave Exeter that says, Teignmouth 400 miles, Newton Abbot 12 miles of is it that Exeter parents scare their kiddies with tales of the coastal folk from Teignmouth who will come and get them if they are naughty.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrggghhhhhh #-o #-o #-o #-o

Thanks.

mmmmmmmmmm I think some people want work delivered to them on a plate........

I have a builder and plasterer in the family here in Devon, the plasterer travels as far as Bristol for works and on two occassions I transported him to Nottingham for my own selfish needs, having someone you can trust to turn up is half the problem, the other half is are they any good...!!!!

I know, it's very frustrating - Haldon seems to be a major barrier ...... The thing is, there is a decent catchment pool for work in Exeter, it saves on fuel and is closer to materials suppliers .... why travel if you don't have to? You might fare better looking towards Newton?

Plus they know all Teignmouth people are two-headed in-breds =))

Plus perhaps Lady G's reputation preceeds her

Si, you want to live on the moon mate.....apparently some bikes mysteriously break down close to the county border

Back on topic....I thought that tradesmen were experiencing a downturn in work given the current economic climate, I'm surprised you have struggled to find someone suitable. BUT that said, fuel costs are having such a massive impact on costing work I totally understand folk wanting to find work closer to home...
If I have to explain, you'll NEVER understand

Someones tired!

I know a sparkie in Newton can ask if he does privates if you like? What needs doing electrical wise I'm a Sparkie but don't normally do privates but if you get really stuck and it's not shed loads as in a couple of sockets etc I'll come and do it with you to make it easier? I work shifts but it's a pretty good pattern although I do tend to miss the good ride outs! Also did you try any of those re housing thingys where they give furniture to people who can't afford it their is one in Exeter and they were going to collect from Tiverton so if they were prepared to come here down with you is pretty safe I'd say!

A good tradesmen wouldn't worry too much about travelling. They'd just be honest about the extra fuel costs from the start and factor the costs into your quotation. Pimps! (that meant easy when we were little :)): )

Don't care who you are, how much you have, how powerful you are. You still sit on the toilet with your pants around your ankles. Yep, it's a level playing field..

Totally agree with you, recession my arse!!!!! How many builders merchants and builders haven't replied with quotes for work. I'm not talknig gaerden sheds either. Reasonable project, not a housing estate granted but... So I have no sympathy for any tradesman who say's they can't find work. Literally, 3 replies from approaching over a dozen builders, and 5 builders merchants. for quotes or estimates. X( X(

Fact is that the one man bands are undercutting companies as their overheads are less. They have all the work and the vat registered companies simply cannot compete. Down my neck of the woods, in the last 6 months, one of the big spark firms laid off 6 sparks whilst a large local plumbers laid off all bar 3. We got companies from plymouth working in barnstaple and barnstaple firms in plymouth, work that one out :-??

I get undercut by firms and one man bands all the time to guarantee them the work. They'll then either whack 'extras' on to the final invoice or cut corners. This makes things difficult for everyone. Honest folk like myself lose work and the public lose confidence and are less likely to employ a tradesman.

You should see the garage conversion I am putting right at the moment, its a piece of sh!t. Corners cut at every turn. But hey, they got paid and are probably driving in their chavvy black nissin pick up with 21 inch rims whilst the home owner just feels rimmed!
