labelled for having a pillion

Post by Fozz »

I ride with a pillion[the wife]over 90% of the time as it is OUR hobby[apparently] :-?
She has a full bike licence but prefers being pillion, and a very good one, reading the road ahead and acting accordingly,i sometimes forget shes there!
On ride outs with other motorcycle groups in the past we have got fed with being placed in a certain group assuming we will be riding at a certain pace.Just wondered if others have experienced this?
Dont get me wrong,we like a bimble, but also like to make good progress when conditions allow and it is safe to do so.
Looking forward to a South West ride out,
Mr and Mrs Fozz.

It's all in the mind.

On a ride out, me on a litre bike and in serious mode was overtaken by a chap with his sub 10 y o daughter on the back.

On another occasion whilst leading a ride in the Cotswolds, I nearly had an off turning into a shady area from bright sunlight and hitting gravel. A fellow behind me on a LARGE bike with the wife on the back also had a serious incident. He later said that it was the most serious slide he'd ever encountered, but that he still couldn't get rid of the wife !

Of course, there is the other end of the stick.

My brother's pal offered a youngster permission to get on his Kawi 1200 at a steam show. The kid stood on the footrest, grabbed he guy's shoulder and pulled the lot over. This broke my pal's leg and caused many £££ damage to the bike.

Can't say i've ever held a judgement when it comes to pillion.
Kim used to come out on my r1 for all the rideouts I felt comfortable taking her on.
When it comes down to it, it's down to the rider and how they want to approach the ride, if they want to ride like they're on a track with a pillion, as an 'adult' through B roads that's down to them.

So long as they don't put others in harms way it's a free world.

I have tried caring a pillion on my old K1 Gixxer 600 but got to say was not a good experiance and would not encourage it. Trying to sort out the K7 thou for the cobweb ride as going to have a friend join in who is down from up country. Either way one rider is differant to the next and your speed confidence and ability are going to be differant. Always dangerous to assume.

Used to take the partner on the back of my bike and she used to fall asleep at normal paces.

On the back of gee46, we used to be able to get a "brisk" pace on which would show surprise most people easily. Especially when in "play mode"

You do get tarnished with the brush but even funnier when they can't shake you.

I've not come across being labelled differently / assumptions being made for having a pillion, but I do ride differently with the missus on the back. All depends on the confidence of the rider and pillion I suppose, which sounds like no issue for you guys

You do know that nowhere it states the pillion has to be facing forwards also,

If you want a giggle lol

But they are unsafe if they do not have feet of foot pegs so might need some alterations or a flexible passenger if your looking to go rearward facing.

Just rmembered.

When I started senior school, my brother, being 5 yrs older was starting 6th form at the same school.

For some of these 2 yrs, he had various bikes and, at those times would take me on the back. No indicators of course and I got to do all the hand signals as I knew where he was going.

On one occasion, on a long right (in town) he suddenly raised his body whilst maintaining the lean of the bike. I saw a bollard aiming to take my head off and took evasive action. That caused a bit of a wobble for a few yards.
