Portimao - hints and tips

Post by R6 STU »

Just 2 more painful days of work then it's off to Portimao.

First time for me, I know a few of you have been a couple times.

Any hints or tips?
Will be staying at the hotel at the circuit.

Avoid the apex on the first left, it's on a crest.
Be aware there are a lot of elevation changes and you'll be tempted to stick your hands in the air like on a roller coaster - don't.

It's a long track so do take the time to learn it, the flat right after the bombhole (you'll Jon y it when you ride it) is taken mid track, not off to the left or right - both of those age dirty.

The last left handed corner on the circuit has a bump right on the apex,
If you go really tight (knee over the curb almost the grass) you can miss is and get a great drive for the rights.

Is it as intimidating as it looks?
Turn 1, Turn 11, blind braking.

4 days on track, 4 days of rain forecast :(

turn 1 + 2 taken together, t3 too if you are fast enough.

blind summit leading into fast right downhill, tight right uphill over bind summit leading into drop with 25% decline into 20% incline, blind right into 20% drop into fast right incline

fun fun fun

I've done 3 days at Oulton
Day 1 - hated it, wanted to go home
Day 2 - This aint so bad
Day 3 - [censored] this track is nuts..

One which makes more sense the faster you go. I'm guessing Portimao is similar

2 or 3 sessions in once you learnt where to go it will just click.

Lots of room and easy to flow.
1,2,3 super flowing.
4 left uphill over crest. (Aim for where you struggle to see.
5, long 180 left. Great fun
6 kink left, (ask red 5 about this part!)
7 flowing right.
8 right tightens
Over the mountain.
9 sweeps left late apex
10 kick right stay left, (lots of overtaking can be done here)
11 90 right over crest)
12 flowing left
13 tight left with bump on apex,
14 180 right double apex opens out.
15 last corner, right hand over crest blind apex flat tap through the gearbox and keep it pinned for the crest onto start finish.

Just relived our 3 days in my head writing that.
May have to think of a return visit.

Ride within your limits, dont listen to anybody else as we all have different lines and different styles
Learn in the sighting laps then ride your own way
If you was to do what i do your probably end up in the litter as my lines are shit and have no idea what anybody just said :80:
Enjoy the experience and keep within your boundaries. Everything comes to those who wait

Most important thing is to enjoy it as it's an awesome experience.

You get two sighting laps to get a feel for the track and you have 3 days to get it mastered to how you ride at your speed of riding.

It's an awesome weekend enjoy

First day today. Worst weather possible.
Wet this morning.
By the time I changed my tyres and got out it was 70%day.
Throughout the afternoon it was dry every session but also rained for 30 seconds EVERY SESSION.
Managed to do a few laps. Amazing track, going to take some learning.
