Ride out routes debate
Ok following a discusion on the summer ride out thread (which dissapeared when I tried to make it 2 threads) it is Time for a debate.
my views on it are
1) we always have tried not to post Exact routes on forum!
2) I think it is a bad Idea to post route on a Public forum we do not need to give the police a helping hand, We all are Guilty of exceding the speed limit at some point even if it is by 5-10 mph enough for 3 points !
The ride out start point and destination can be posted no problem but if a member need the exact route this can sent by Pm to them.
There was a comment about it being an SWB underground set up, we do not have anything to hide, but as I said we do not need to give the police an easy catch.
I know people are still upset because of the resent loss of Frank and comments made by a web site regarding the road Frank was on.

Let me see now, I think we should show the entire route along with approximate times at strategic points, and each participant must post machine make, model, colour and reg. no., colour of clothing and helmet, and licence number along with insurance policy details, solicitor details and next of kin to contact, preferred newspaper contact and same for tv network. It would also help if participants were to help our brave political masters by volunteering as lab rats for any gps location equipment that needs testing prior to compulsory fitment, and engine management systems that ensure speed limits are adhered to. Mobile phone numbers should also be volunteered to make monitoring of calls simpler and we should also register for that system you see on the back of lorries whereby other road users can ring in and congratulate/criticise our standard of riding. Copies of all the above info should be distributed well in advance of the ride to the Home Office, all emergency services and the Air Ambulance service. We should appoint a person to inspect each machine prior to the start for general mechanical safety, upto date tax, cosmetic appearance, illegal cans and small number plates. Any machines failing to reach the required standard must be immediately impounded for imminent crushing. Should the ride start from a cafe then breakfasts containing beans should be banned as farting whilst travelling through towns and villages may cause offence to local residents. Fag breaks may only take place in areas of the countryside more than a mile from any residence. Sheep shagging whilst in North Devon is to be strongly discouraged. Persons performing wheelies will responsible for buying everyone refreshments at the destination. Over and out. Hope this is helpful.

You forgot to say clean underware must be worn by all riders
Good post Greg

..and a device should be invented that forces greg to write in paragraphs.
its very very dumb to post your route. post your meet time and like is said earlier an estimate of rough mileage or time the ride is expected to take and whether you plan on stopping for food.
like it or not there is riding that goes on at those ride outs that will get people knicked, and far worse than just a speeding prosecution if its a group ride and they get a few following each other by hiding in a hedge somewhere then the speeding is the least of your worries - if they want to get pissy about it they can pin racing on public roads on you and thats wreckless driving and a sure fire ban.
Im not saying that people race each other on SWB ride outs becuase as far as I can see it they dont - but thats an irrlevance if the police want to pin it on you and can manage to get a couple of consecutive speeding motorcyclists by hiding in the hedge for a day.

Re: Ride out routes debate
Very good point i think, and i hadn't thought of it that way and like someone said it can always be in a pm to people or put in a private forum.AGE996 wrote:

Very true.TerminatorChris wrote:Private forums are not the way forward, you want to ENCOURAGE people to go on ride-outs, not make them hush hush...Besides, whats stopping a copper becoming a SWB Member and viewing all the forums anyway.
This isn't a secret society. Whats the point of only putting the start and the finsh of rideouts, plod aren't stupid i think they would have a good idea of the route in between (major roads anyway).
I realise that coming on a ride out with the route well promulgated will maybe mean that plod turn up, but i have nothing to hide (except for a small plate and race can) but i knew the risks when i fitted them, just cos the routes not on the net doesn't mean i won't get pulled by the fuzz for having them.
The same goes for speeding, if you get caught during a rideout (not that anyone would speed), its your own fault. You can say 'well that camera van wouldn't of been there if the route wasn't on the site', but at the end of the day, you control your throttle and are therefore responsible for your actions and their consequences.

Whilst I think we should be open and honest to avoid being accused of being naughty by either the police or press (and I'm sure both read the site regularly) there are a lot of arguments for being cautious and not providing a complete route map.
So if a copper is sitting waiting somewhere and 3 or 4 SWB riders go past at/near the speed limit ........ ?????
On another thread someone was accused of being paranoid about the way bikers are treated - down here it is calm and quiet - try riding upcountry. I have personally been pushed by a car because I had the nerve to take up a whole space at the traffic lights - the only reason I didn't drop the bike was because he actually stopped on my foot!!! He then shouted abuse at me through his open window, although he did drive off with his wing mirror on the passenger seat!!!! I've seen a bike forced off the road and into a deep ditch by a car driver (the police wouldn't prosecute because they weren't there, despite 7 people willing to give evidence), I was verbally abused and nearly knocked off by a car driver angry at me "jumping a queue", was pillion when attacked by two yobs because we were stuck in traffic plus I've been refused drinks and on two occasions actually thrown out of pubs ..... for the crime of being a biker.
It is not paranoia, it's real.
apologies for the furry-length post!!!
Spot on - a friend of mine was driving a sports car and was following two others, a dog ran out and was hit by the front one and the police had to be called. My friend was in the back car - he was done for wreckless driving, driving without due care and attention, speeding (subsequently dropped through lack of proof) racing on a public highway and his insurance took the hit for the damage to the other two cars because the middle car argued that he had stopped but was pushed forward when hit from behind. My mate lost his licence, had a huge fine, lost all his no-claims and pays horrendous insurance nowadays - and all because he was driving a sports car behind two others by sheer coincidence and they were all driving a bit too close (in a 40 limit doing less than 40 because of the traffic).jason wrote: if its a group ride and they get a few following each other by hiding in a hedge somewhere then the speeding is the least of your worries - if they want to get pissy about it they can pin racing on public roads on you and thats wreckless driving and a sure fire ban. Ok my go
Personally and for one reason only I think the route should be shown, and here is my reason (it has nothing to do with the police / plod or anything like that).
When we as a SWB group go out on a ride, we are forever losing people, (it happens, its a fact of life), but if the route is shown on site before the ride, at least those people who may get lost for what ever reason will know where to go for a the next stop.
I know you all say about using the drop off system - BUT NOT MANY USE IT.
If it was a guarantee that people used the DROP OFF SYSTEM, then I would say Start & Finish points only.
FAILING THAT SOMEONE PRINTS OFF A LOADS OF ROUTES ON PAPER AND HANDS THEM OUT BEFORE PEOPLE LEAVE - This was Jaks Idea.
Speedy goes and hides in the corner waiting for the abuse to start
