Yesh ZXR400 is good for fuel, VFR is just wimp. Do u know why GSXR 400 cc is just banned for production for TT? Bevause people die for GSXR 400.. it's true. oh well I blessed for he,. God help/

ZXRs are good, but they break more often than Hondas.
I like the ZXR because of the hard suspension, but I have a CBR400 Gullarm and it handles really well. You hardly need any input, it just "falls" into the corners.
I found the ZXR quite top-endey, whereas my CBR certainly had more grunt lower down.
I would get a Honda because they are damn reliable (bar the electrics). ZXRs have more mechanical problems, which I would find more annoying.
Bear in mind the VFR400 has very high spec parts: half slipper clutch, single sided swingarm, sweet V4 engine.
I was initially in the market for a VFR, but my CBR just happened to pop up at the right time, at the right price. On the road/track there wouldn't be much at all in it between the VFR and the CBR. So bear in mind a nice Gullarm.

A few more things. When I say "electrics" I really only mean the regulator/rectifier goes, and they are £35 second hand.
VFR vs RVF, there isn't enough difference to justify the £1000+ price tag. They are pretty much Identical, bar very small insignificant changes
GSX-R and the FZR400 I wouldn't touch, as they are too rare and unreliable. I had a poke around a Gixer4 and I would say the build quality doesn't even come close to my CBR400.
Cue Furry coming in and arguing.

If you go for a Honda VFR, spend the extra dough, dont buy a CHEAP one, if its too good to be true, it probably is, my bestmate rides an NC30 and currently aint running, wont even fire up, just backfires!!
My second point is that you can't judge reliability on one bike. True your mate has an NC30 that doesn't start. My friends on ZXRs have had, gearbox problem, head gasket go, and other recons his engine is almost on the way out.
Obviously I'm going to say the Hondas are better. I'm just saying why I think this, it's up to you to make your own mind up. But in all fairness Hondas are better bikes than Kawasakis, particularly the older bikes.
Re: 400cc
lmao what the hell was all that about??
All I picked out was apparently the GSXR-400 is the best thing around faster than an R6
the ZXR 400 has good fuel economy (obveously I ride a freak zxr I dont think they are that good on fuel uses a dam site more than the zx12 though
) and the VFR is for wimps??
You need help mate

150mph is what the clocks were reading, my Dad on his Hayabusa behind me, and an Escort RS Cosworth in front of me. Still on this private road about 2 miles long of course. It was really struggling, I was fully tucked in, wind behind me, wound it right up, was in top gear and was just over 14,000rpm..!! Only been that fast on it twice... the bike feels best between 80mph and 100mph. My ZXR isnt standard uprated full exhaust system, air filter and dynojet. Still though, it aint about top end, if I wanted top end I'd buy a Hayabusa or 12R.

Re: 400cc
OK, 150 on the clocks IS about 135 true.
600s with 100bhp do 145/150mph, not 400ccs with 60bhp.

true what claud said.probably about 135mph-140MPH MAX.
what do u mean best between 80 and 100? surely it would be "best" from about 0-90ish then it would start to slag alot like all 400's.
and am i correct in saying u will get a better top end in 5th gear than 6th?
or not, because its true on an nc30 so why not on the zxr?
400's are handling not speed hence i down geared mine.as speed doesn't tickle my sacks anymore.
i mean when do over a 100 on a decent set of twisties?.....rarely do u find corners that are full on cranked over at a 100+ which is "safe"...unless you ride the A358 from minehead to taunton.
I love Lamp.
Re: 400cc
I think my ZXR is geared up too high....it cruises along at like 110mph with ease at 9,500rpm. Up against a VFR400 NC30 on acceleration its exactly the same all the way up to 90mph, nothing in it at all. When I said best at 80-100, I mean thats my most comfortable speed... I use bike for commuting everyday. (Rear suspension a bit hard though!)
My 5th and 6th gears are almost exactly the same, either leave it in 5th or knock it up into 6th and does the same top end and no matter how hard I try the front wont lift up even in first gear, kinda pops about 6 inches off the ground. The fastest I've ever been fully over is about 85mph, tend not to look at the speedo but that was fast enough!!

What gearing are you running Jewell on your NC30? I might change mine, I'd like better acceleration rather than top end, I hardly ever ride on the dual carriageway, I try and avoid it so I can go through the twisties

I think Honda's are the best bet.... GSXR400's and ZXR's are too focused and matainance heavy!
VFR/RVF might be a nice option as they can be big-bored to 550cc
swiiiiing!
Personally if you can though... get a bigger bike... easyier to work on (most of the time) and last much longer
