Riding along most times - wondering what sort of stuff to tink about inside my helmet and often tempted to pull up at the next pub, increasing my specific gravity by drinking 10 gals of Larger and when I fall off, I hit the road like a brick and stop dead - hey, no rash!
Is it just me thinks up this sort of stupid stuff when riding along...?

But seriously, I take the point of wise Billi, I couldn't afford some of the kit available in the 70's and rode in freezing cold soaked to the bone, fell off a few times like most have but little seems to change looking at the price of kit on the shelves. I wonder how guy's new to biking can afford some of it let alone have a choice to wear it or not. Riding in the dripping heat presents another temptation to start peeling stuff off and that's difficult to resist riding thru Italy, France & Spain etc.

I know what you mean about the price of kit, when my boy got his 125 at 17 last august it was his first bike so we had to get everything, he stung me for about £400 of RST leathers and a helmet. He thought he had a hard time because we made him buy his gloves and boots but i wanted to make sure he was well covered up as he would be riding to work at Bovey everyday.........

I totally agree that it's your own choice and I have even done the whole pillion thing with cropped trousers and even used to go round in just a denim jacket before I got a proper bike Jacket (as a pillion) as well as trainers. I do occassionally go round in jeans too but feel safest in full gear. Half my issue is the fact that i had a bike accident in the summer of 2005, it was wet and i met a truck down a country lane, i just think about how i could of ended up without my full gear on, as it is i ended up with a scar on my right knee from it and burns from the contact from my jacket as well as two broken arms. It's up to you what you wear while riding, I just don't appreciate them moaning about their injuries afterwards, but i suppose it gives us a good laugh and we can turn round and say 'I told you so'..

...I wouldn't wish an accident on anyone but I think you can appreciate what i'm trying to say (I hope)...

But seriously though my point i did make was about muppets who wear T-shorts, Shorts and Trainers.

If i saw you going past wearing Helmet, jacket, Gloves, Jeans and Trainers then i prob wouldn't take a second glance as i feel that is prob safe for short, city travelling. The Trainers would make me think twice as i know how easy it is to get your LACE caught on the peg and drop the bike when stopping at a red light . Hence why i won't wear trainers anymore or again

But please get real some of you, i ain't here dictacting what you should wear but to even consider riding without an Helmet is INSANE I don't even let my kids ride thier cycles without an Helmet. Ok some of you are far more experince then me and prob feel able to do this but i could be 100 years old with a 100 years experience and still not consider this. I have tried it, the wind in your hair and face just feels glorious and alive. But the F*cking d*ckhead driving blind and pulls out in front of you is not great

HELMET, JACKET (of some thickness), GLOVES, JEANS, BOOTS (even ankle boots) are a min i would consider for me.

But hey thats my condition. I ride 16 miles round trip work everyday and add leather trousers to that list. But i can gurantee the day i wear less then i will know what it feels like without.

TOP TIP FOR SAFETY The St Christopher i have had on my keyring for many many years and since i have not had a serious crash. TOUCH WOOD

have to agree witht he trainer lace comment,,, without going into details, it is not very cool to get your lace caught on a lever whilst coming to a stop i wear paratrooper boots on the bike and all laces are safely tucked away..

Yep Ive done the trainer tumbel Always boots for me these days

Once saw a bloke turn up to meet a dive boat on Oban quay on a Kwaka 750. It was lagging it down with rain, he was clad in a wet suit, mask and fins in a bag and high pressure scuba tank on his back just to make it exciting. I suppose the rationale was that if he came of the resultant explosive release of 200 bar pressure from the scuba tank would send him into orbit - ergo no gravel rash!

hi Just got back from holiday in florida and take they stupid to a whole new extreme . They will ride all types of bikes at all speeds in t shirt, shorts and no lid.

Top 3 idiots were
3: The girl pillion on a Yellow gsxr 1000 ( it was sorry ) with a bikini, Flip flops and no lid.
2: Guy on a harley with shorts, t -shirt, no lid and smoking a fag,

But the best of all was the guy that past me at over 70 on the interstate on an harley ( how'd he get it going that fast ), Wearing shorts, t- shirt, No lid or shoes of any kind whilst talking on his mobile.
Bloody funny to see but then you think "twat"

i know the people and i too cant believe what i see! sod that but its up to them i suppose.

However i have a question, i am a new rider and i wear a pair of sidi boots, frank thomas textile trousers, alpinestars textile jacket and sidi gloves my question is if i do have a spill how well protected am i really? i was told jeans are th next best to leathers but now i'm not so sure.
I ride mostly for pleasure, generally avoid the rain but was caught for the first time on the 7 taking it to GT's on saturday - i got soaked as the jacket isn't waterproof!

who the hell told you that jeans are better than textiles ??

for crash protection i'd say the best is
leather
kevlar
goretx/cordura
draggin jeans or equivelant
jeans at the end

the top three will all have protection in the places you need it,the draggin style jeans have a layer of protection but your basic levis wont offer much protection over 20mph
get the best you can with your money,its worth the investement to protect your body
