About go wrong with the TRF site for info, there's year and years of it there.
As for 2t VS 4t it's an age old battle. Personally I think 4t is better for starting out as it's more forgiving, can get some good machinery for that budget, don't forget you'll need kit too.
I have a 4t but got the chance to play on a 2t in wales - tons of fun. It did change my view of them although I don't think i'll be making the switch any time soon.
Feel free to post up any links to bikes you find, I'm sure you'll get some feedback on them.
Come to the darkside, we get Muddy.

If doing greenlanes and gentle play a 4t is alot more friendly for the roads.
If enduro or hard play then 2t is the way to go.
For 3-4k will get you a 2015-2018 bike with good hours and condition. If new a 250 4t will do all you want/need and not feel like going to be too much.
If you want an all round bike which will do greenlanes as well as a hack then a crf 250L or similar could be a option.

2t will rip but also rip up the green lanes, which may draw the ire of the general public and some TRF. I'm in a similar situation, liking the look of a 300 2t, but then there is premix and rebuild intervals to consider - not even sure if premix is a thing on these bikes though. If your're planning on doing big road miles to get to the off road sections then 4t has to be the winner.

Tpi and beta 2t (excluding race bikes) are mostly 2stroje oil injection from 2017 on. So premix is a thing of the past.
2t will still do the miles, I have a 250 tpi and currently on 115hrs on original piston.

Cool. 50hp out of a 300 exc sounds fun! Has to be less peaky than a Cr250. Vintage bike like a pe250 ? No mot or tax needed
