Another What Bike?

OK, I've found a few bikes I like but cant decide which one to go for, heres a rough idea.

Yamaha YZF600R Thundercat
Suzuki sv650s
Kawasaki ZZR600

The insurance on all of these is pretty competetive, just cant decide which one to go for. Bear in mind I have just passed, but would like a bike which I can grow with and ride for a while. Dont want something I'll outgrow pretty quickly. I'm a safe rider and havn't (touch wood) dropped or crashed a bike yet.

What would you do...? :D

SV650 (seeing as you didn't say Hornet  )

A mate passed his test recently and bought this for his first bike, he seems to like it.....

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works

Have u thought about the CBR 600??

Real nice bike to ride and is fairly easy and cheap to insure, found the ride much beter than the thundercat.

Just be warned if you do get a CBR listen to the motor at about 3000 rpm, if there is a rattle or tapping, knock the price down at least 100quid so u can have a new cam chain adjuster fitted.

Apart from that fault u got a sweet :) fast :D :D good looking bike  .

good luck in the search for your toy

Keep in mind CBR's are the most knicked bikes in this country, don't let that HISS crap make you think your bike is safe, a new ECU and harness is less than £500 these days, and professional thieves will goto those lengths to nick a CBR, ring it and sell on, likewise cos so many peeps have CBR's, they are also nicked for parts to be sold on to unsuspecting punters...

Oh also and I forgot to say that CBR engines are becomming more highly strung, so where a hornet will clock up many happy miles, a CBR could die from wearing the bore from as little as 30'000 miles!!!

Hornet bit more of a wise choice, likewise SV650 also good too, as discussed in the other thread...

ZZR600, hmmmmm bit more of an "older-man's" bike, the sort of bike you would buy just to get from A to B rather than have some fun on, remember they are nothing like the ZXR600!

Anyway I'm sure I've said something in that lot that will piss someone off, but thats the facts, Hornet or SV650, can't go wrong, If you got a full licence, both cracking bikes, if your restricted for some reason, SV650 is the better option :)

Unfaired Hornet, Twin headlights, Micron can and you're almost sorted.

I'm sure SV650's are nice bikes but to me, atleast, they look ugly as hell! As furry said, If restricted they would be better than a IL4.

It seems to me (by the bikes you've listed) that you're not fussy if it's a tourer, sports commuter or sports-ish bike?

Forget about the tourers, You're not 45 yet :)
Bandit, Hornet, SV650, Fazer are the big 4 commuters.
CBR600 is a good alround sports bike
ZX6R is quite a alrounder too

Shite, Gotta go out...Maybe post some more later

Oh forgot to talk about the Yam you listed...
I wouldn't touch any Yam with a barge pole, they think cos they stunned the world with the R1, that they can do what they like, but the build quality and design under the plastics of their bikes, well my 6 yr old niece could do better...
(Donno don't care LOL)

Don't get all happy on Honda's either, their build quality isn't as amazing as everyone likes to make out, but on the whole it's of a good standard...
(Parts can be pricey, but they are very good)

Kazi's, used to be patchy on build quality, but late 90's onwards they made progress, and their latest bikes put the likes of Honda and Suzuki to shame (ZX6R and ZX10R are just mint!)
(Parts are reasonable in price and quality)

Suzuki, well they never get it quite spot on, but the engines are good, and they use good materials and chuck out well designed machines.
(Parts cost shitloads, my TL1000R just cost £1500 over the winter to do what I wanted to do to it!!!)

Anyway had to give my verdict on Honda/Kazi/Suzuki as I'm sure I'm gonna get moaned at for my comments on Yams LOL

Keeping in mind as Loz can vouch from my garage, I take bikes apart on a daily basis and knock up some cracking stuff, I mean look at my gsxr400, not much to look at, but if you know your 400's you will know mine's been well modded :D

Ok all that to one side, yes the bandit600, how could I forget that tidy piece of kit, Suzuki parts bin special that does kick ass, I'd still go for the SV650, but if your not one for V-twins, can't go wrong with a bandit600, it's on level playing field with the Hornet600, and I'd be slightly inclined to go with the Hornet if it was a choice purely between those two!

What has just come to mind, and appolgies for me not saying this sooner, if you have got the money to spend on a brand new bike, I would def go for the Daytona 650... Looks sharp, and it a real road going bike, forget the bhp figures, allthough these are good for the 650, have a go on one m8, I wanted so badly to buy a daytona but the bigger cc version, but I couldn't find anyone selling one, people who own them don't wanna sell them on they are that good!!! (Not to mention build more recent Triumph's put Jap's to shame! Which is good cos it means less spending on spares, and more money for beer in the pub!)

I think we could really do with a pinned FAQ on this, in my eyes, if you got a full licence, would go something like this...

Bandit600
Supurb Inline-4 bike, bags of fun, engine built like a brick s.hit house, easy to work on, easy to matain!

SV650
V-Twin that really does deliver the goods on the road, I've seen one in proper hands leave a GSXR1000 K2 on the traffic lights standing! Engine really does put it on, cheep as chips too but wouldn't buy new, their value goes down quickly! (And remember the 1999 carb version only worth £1500, don't let anyone out there try to tell you otherwise, I've seen 1999 models 2nd hand avertised for £2200 plus, they can piss off!!!)

Also good to work on, try to keep off the wheelies though, on a V-Twin it will quickly kill the big end bearnings, not a cheep thing to sort!

Kazi ZZR600
Capable Tourer, but you'll get bored of it quickly

Kazi ZX-6R
Full on insanity, def not a bike for a newbie

Kazi ZX-7R
I think it looks gorgous, kicks ass on the road but keep off the wheelies, does the main bearings in!

Honda CBR600
As said above, not a good idea, espically the newer ones they are ticking timebombs

Hornet600
Fooosin ace machine, can do lots with em, and they just do it all so well, hard to get bored of one unless your a spoiled brat!

Daytona650
Don't touch the 600's Daytona's, only the 650 is worth looking at, but I've been on it's bigger brother, and they are flippin fantasic piss on Jap's in every sence of the word (About time us brits kicked the Japs in the ass)

First bike always an important one, as your most likely going to buy from that brand again, I'd say if you can afford a new bike, go british you'll be glad you did, but if not, look at some of the jap stuff

PS: Oh Also worth a note, the ammount of bike mags I've got floating around, I've prolly got reviews on most of the bikes here so if you want me to have a look, lemme know!

Awwwwwww blueflier :(

I knew saying that was gonna drop me in the shat :( lol

Maybe I was a bit harsh, but well I can't really slate the other 3 Jap makes, I mean none of them are perfect, so can't fault them (well apart from Honda's are common, but well depends if you care about being an individual or not I guess!)

Soz but Yam come out with all these funky bikes, trying to get a slice of the pie, and when they do, they think their something special, it just ain't washing with me I've seen other Jap makes produce far better machines, they think cos the R1 did the business on the track, they can wing it on that alone, ok R1 is the UK's no.1 selling bike, but most of them are owned by townies and only a few by real bikers!

Anyway I could rant all long, at the end of the day it's about the biker not the bike!

Well A_T, their is not a mag that on it's own covers every angle, but between RIDE and Used bike guide I keep fairly well informed :D I donno if I could give the commitment to a bike mag for writing up, but was thinking about starting up a bikers group at the students union in Cardiff, but you need at least 14 peeps, and I don't know 14 bikers at uni LOL

The End...For now :P

At the end of the day all bikes have thier pro's and con's.

My advise would be try all the bikes you like.

Pick the one you want.

And check it out with non-bias mechanic if pos.

If it no good look for the same bike somewhere else.

DONT RUSH INTO YOUR BIKE!

Any one can recomend a bike but we all ride and feel feedback differently.

Good luck. :D

Oh also noting, not long ago in RIDE there was a good thingie about buying 2nd hand bikes...

If your not going to buy one new, it's really worth giving it a look though, I could scan in if you wanted, was a really good article!
