really starting to piss me off! i have a compaq presario 700 laptop bout 4 years old now.
it used to occasionally freeze up then u had to pull the power, now it's doing it all the time (every 20/30 mins or so!!) and also sometimes the keyboard/mouse stop working, but music etc keeps playing...
as this is happening more often i have noticed that the amount of heat it creates has got worse - getting so hot u cant touch it!!!

i dont know much about computer hardware so im a little stuck??! help please

Could be over heating, dust clogs up the fan/heatsink. Find the vents and blow in them as hard as you can, if not you may have to take it apart to clean it.

Yeah as its a few years old it will probably need a bit of a service buddy, probably that simple. Give it a good clean and replace the fan, for a few extra quid you can get some real good ones, thinner and anti dust like, brother had one for his....worked a treat, makes a little less noise too.
Failing that, then i haven't a clue :?

Could be the fan bearing too, is it noisy? The fan bearing on mine went and had to replace the hard drive, still, got five years out the fecker.

It might also be worth checking that there are no processes running which are making the CPU run at a high percentage of max - this can generate the extra heat and also 'stop' other processes responding.

Usual cause of above is spyware/virus BUT I would expect you to be complaining of very poor response times when surfing the net as well

Could be alot of things I have repaired alot of pcs with those symptoms and found most times it is spyware or virus or simply lack of storage space and system resources. If it is 4+ years old your probably best off picking up a new dell on ebay for like 300 cash. I normally charge 25 dollars an hour for service in my area and they have to bring it to me drop it off and I call them when it is done that is only labor fee not counting parts. that is half what the other locals charge near me and I dont even like doing it anymore. Most times the people should just backup what they want and reload it all. If it is not a P4 class pc you should consider using it for a speed bump or target practice like those annoying aol cds you get in the mail. It is amazing what a .45 can do to one of them from a few hundred feet.
