My bike has never missed a beat... Until...

I took it in to a garage for a service, including the usual oil and filter change...

Rode home, then to work (Total 5-6 miles)

Went to start it the next morning and she didn't want to play...

Eventually she fired and... Kaboom !!

3 Litres of oil running down my drive, pissing out from the filter area...

Back in the garage, new filter and oil... it happened again.

The mechanic can't find what's wrong, he's called Suzuki and they haven't heard of it before, so today they got a machine to measure pressures... It read 6 Bar at 4000 revs and he thinks it should be between 2 - 4.

He's fitted yet another filter and it appears to be holding but he doesn't want me to have it back and it go again when I'm riding it, so is getting back to Suzuki to check proper pressures.

Has anyone experienced this before... ?

You're lucky it's only the filter seal that's gone

Plugs, Levels, Oil change, Filter etc... (New Tyres, 'cause I got 2 nails in them )

He suggested that it could be the 'Oil Pressure Switch in the sump'...

I've got a workshop manual for the Hayabusa & although it may not be the same model of Suzuki as you've got, it'll give you an idea. It states that oil presure should be;-
Above 200kPa(43psi, 2.96bar)
Below 500kPa(71psi, 4.89bar) at 3000rpm

Also for a comparison/general idea of bike presures here's some info for my bikes:-
SP2's oil presure is quoted as 63psi or 4.34bar at 5000rpm at the oil filter.
VFR800Fi is quoted as 71psi or 4.89bar at 6000rpm at the oil presure switch.

The above may turn out to be useless to you, but it may give you an idea. Hope it helps.

oil pressure switches have a habit of playing up but it does sound very odd mate

is it still under warranty ??

the oil pressure switch merely measures the pressure flowing in the system and sends a signal when it drops too low. It doesn't create pressure, so I can't see how it could cause the pressure increase

Was it working fine before it went in If so, it would imply it's something they have done .....

It could be that something has got in and blocked one of the oil galleries, or they kinked an external oil line (to a cooler, etc.,), or they've used the wrong filter ......

Was all fine before, never missed a beat...

Said they use genuine Suzuki oil filters... please note : I do trust this garage fully, and if it's their fault I think they'll hold their hands up.

No expert but it does sound like something is blocked and I guess when the oil was changed whatever is doing the blocking had moved.

I guess the hard part* is finding whats causing the problem.

surely it cant be to difficult to find if its a oil problem as it can only flow around the system and must have stopped somewhere to allow a build up of pressure

Sounds like a pressure release valve problem to me.

All oil pumps have a valve in them to regulate the pressure,they open when the pressure gets to high.
Some of these valves are in the pump but I think that I am right in saying that some are built into the oil filter.

Sometimes you have a problem getting oil pressure after an oil change as well.

Deffo get it sorted Nick as you don't want this to happen when your tipping it into a corner.

never heard of such a thing before, but like age says dont take it back until you have a 100% explanation and fix!

have heard of a similair probelm with a zx9 or zx6 where the oil filter wasnt filled before fitting and after filling it showed as having a oil issue

does sound weird though

To mantained the oil pressure at expectable limits in engines there are oil pressure relief values. These do break but not very often.
Within the oil filter it is a bypass valve so if the oil filter was to become blocked dirty oil to the engine is better than no oil so it wouldn't be that unless they have fittted the incorrect filter.

Crankcase breather could be blocked or kinked would be one of the first places i would look.

Also check exhaust system for blockages as this will create over pressure back thought the crankcase and a lack of power.

These would be the first places i would look then investage deeper after that.
