I'm not really sure what the problem is. It was left for two weeks as I went away for Christmas and when I came back nothing. The engine is turning over but nothing's firing...very frustrating. it doesn't seem to be a problem with fueling and the battery if fine. Any ideas???

Fuel Injection ? I would check the Battery especially if you have an allarm, it will turn the system over but the ECU won;t start it unless it has the required current so if the battery drops below a certain voltage it will not start.

Thanks for the fast response, Its a 2000 r6 so it has carbs, no injection and no alarm, my mate and I tried to bump and jump it but still no luck. Im gonna have a look at the carbs tomorrow and see if theres any crap in them but its unlikely, I keep it very clean, I only got it 2 months ago and I put new plugs in then so im sure its not the spark plugs. Maybe the coil packs are gone? and It does need an oil change.
The wierd thing is the bike started fine at first when I got back from christmas then when I reved it after about 3 mins warm up it just cut out and wouldnt fire again.
Any ideas would be great as I have the mechnacal, understanding and skill of a blind dog.
Check the fuel pump, sounds like there was enough fuel in the carbs when you last ran it, but the pump didn't keep them filled so it just ran out - when you've been trying to start it can you smell unburnt petrol from the exhaust? Crack one of the drain screws on a float bowl (if you can get to it) and see if there's any fuel in them - if they're dry then the fuel pump's probably the culprit - from what I recall of Yamahas, the fuel pump will chug away when the ignition's turned on and then stop when the carbs are filled - does this happen?

aright m8 check the obvious first. like kill switch, fuel in tank, fuel tap in right position, battery fully charged, ( i know it sounds obvious but you'd be suprised) then i'd check for a spark first, then checking the fuel filter, pump etc working your way to the carbs, if it has been standing for a while i would drain all of the float bowls, hope you sort it soon
Drain carbs, check plugs and make sure you haven't simply run out of fuel. A bit of fuel conditioner like Pro FST wouldn't hurt incase there's some water in the fuel.
Cheers again guys for all your help!
Its not the kill switch lol, but I will check the fuel pump, plugs and carbs. Watch this space and thanks again for all the advice.
