Change the clocks to get an extra usable hour of daylight!

Post by AndyW »

The proposal the government is considering is for Britain’s clocks to be set to GMT+1 in winter and GMT+2 in summer......there are lots of benefits, road safety, more usable daylight leisure time, reduced CO2 emissions, reduction in household fuel bills...

The Daylight Saving Bill is waiting to hit committee stage (where MPs thrash out the precise wording), but in the meantime there's plenty we can do to move things along on other fronts. Here's the first...

Remember we said it's all about getting the cabinet on board? Well, the tourism minister John Penrose is writing a paper outlining what the government should do to promote and regulate the industry.

We know that lighter evenings would give a massive boost to UK leisure and tourism, bringing an extra £3bn into the economy and creating around 80,000 much-needed new jobs. If Penrose's report recognises this, it could help persuade his fellow ministers to back the change.

You know the drill by now – let's tell John Penrose that backing lighter evenings is one of the best things the government can do to support tourism and create jobs in this country.

I don't see the point :?

if you want longer days , get up earlier and stay up later
it won't make a difference to road safety etc. bad drivers still won't see you if they arn't looking.

And personally I'm more bothered about the crap state of roads and the stupidly expensive cost of fuel these days. No offence Andy, just think its a waste of time and money better spent elsewhere.

That would ruin our early morning rides, although they could be replaced with 9PM ones 8) I'd be up for even lighter evenings, screw light mornings, you should either be sleeping until 11am, or stuck at work, no iffs or buts imo. Either way, they're useless.

Gotta agree with Badger, I cannot see what all the fuss is about, just get up earlier or go to bed later, whatever they do with the clocks and time they will not change the amount of hours daylight in a day, Time was invented by the swiss and germans to sell watches and cuckoo clocks

Missing the point (that will appeal to most people)........change clocks as proposed: spend the day at work and get home to an extra hour's daylight ;-)

no I am Not missing the point mate as i say
Time was invented by the swiss and germans to sell watches and cuckoo clocks

I suppose people with 9 too 5 office jobs this would appeal to them, but my days do not rely on daylight
you just go do what you need to do, if it is drak you switch the lights on. it is always dark at 3 am when i am working some mornings

Put them an hour forward in the winter and leave the summer alone. Then we don't have to change the clocks and thows of us who work outside don't have to stop at 4pm during mid winter.

Also that extra hour of daylight is only really relevent in mid winter, when the roads are covered in wet mud and other such shit, its chucking it down with rain/ sleet and its still pretty dimpsy for an hour before it gets proper dark anyway. Like i said waste of time and money, theres far more important things Rospa should be dealing with first, like the state of the roads themselves, that causes more accidents than dark evenings.
