Changing front break disks.

Post by Google »

Following some heavy breaking on the way home today I have decided that I need some new front disks (warp judder judder wabble wabble)

As far as changing them goes just a few quick questions. Incidently my bike gets used more than it gets cleaned so there is a fair chance that the disk bolts may be fairly welded on with salt filth etc.

1 is there any prep that's worth doing before trying to undo the bolts? WD40?

2 Is a torque wrench absolutely essential?

3 any other tipps before I buy the disks and break out the haynes manaual?

Yes WD40 possibly they will have been fitted with thread locker so some heat on the bolts will help release that, Torque wrench not absoluty esential but maybe a good idea as a bit of thread locker on thr threads

yes you may not even need the wd40 if they are threadlocked

I have found that if you give them a good tap (Belt) first they are more likely to come out (Breaks the thread lock)

I always torque to be on the safe side.

If you get any siezed bolts get something like a heat gun or even a hair dryer and warm up the wheel under the disc where the bolt treads in. The ally of the wheel expands quicker than the steel bolt thus breaking the seal. You could also try putting a punch into the middle of the hex on the bolts and give it a sharps few taps with a hammer. When trying to undo the bolt the hex heads are easy to round of so take care with that. I find an allan socket on a bar works best.

Do opposites when you do the bolts up like you should on car wheels.

Brakes are amongst the most important things on your bike so if you have any doubt take it to a mechanic
