Reserve tank

Time for Captain's Daily Stoopid Question Time!

I was warned to remember to flick the switch back to normal after running out of fuel and flicking to the reserve tank (after filling up).
I've read up on HOW the reserve tank works and understand. However, because I'm still newish to this lark, I'm having trouble finding the switch while riding - so each time I've run out, I've stopped, flicked, waited and then carried on.

Now I've just realised that I have't got enough fuel for tomorrows journey to work, and as I leave before any of the local petrol stations are open (except the motorway services, which I'd rather not pay for!). I'm not that worried about it - I know there's enough in the reserve for a full trip from home to work. What I AM worried about is grinding to a stop on the hard shoulder of the M5 in the pitch black, with half asleep truckers drifting dangerously close to me!

So after this long explanation, I finally reach my qustion:
Is it safe to flick to reserve tank before I start tomorrow, knowing the situation? I plan to fill up when I finish work.

For the sake of a 50p saving , I think I'd be popping into the motorway services for a fill up.

As Scorcher says, you don't have to fill it right up, just stick a fivers worth in to give you the comfort of knowing you can get to work safely .....

Yeah, I'd say stick a fiver in the tank at a services, but its no problem to leave your reserve on, I did it for over six months when I had a fuel tap problem last year, just remember to turn it back when you refill your tank ;) !
