There are a lot of jokes about owning a GSXR 1000 but in reality the 2nd hand market will find you a good deal for your money and a choice of lots of spares. From owning one myself and riding it I can tell you that they will be faster then you will ever need it to be and have good enough brakes and suspension for what you will do unless you happen to ride for a superbike team.

R1 are generally deemed to have better build quality and will look better for longer. That does not mean they are more reliable through. Depending on how much you are planning on spending and how new you are going the Yamaha will offer you more then the Suzuki with things like electronics, cross plane crank engine etc.

In all honesty the best thing to do is go and ride both of them as they will feel very different and then make your decision based on personal preference. As I ride a GSXR 1000 it's clear my preference.

Any reason your only looking at GSXR and R1? I.e. why not Fireblade, ZX10?

Being rude what sort of money will you be spending?
As like for like you should be able to get a year or 2 newrr gixxer just because there is so many on the market.

They both are great bikes

Indeed what's the budget? You might be surprised what other options exist.

Personally, I wouldn't get hung up on a particular bike til you've test ridden a number of options. Just because one particular model suits one person, doesn't mean it suits another. Riding position, power delivery, brake feel, etc., all mean different things to different people. Equally different models of bikes can change a lot across the years - a cross-plane crank R1 is a very different bike to the original R1, and equally different to the latest version, for example .......

1) pick a night when you won't be disturbed by anyone.
2) sit down and drink 8 to 10 cans of cider.
3) when it feels right (you will no when) go on eBay.
4) wake up in the morning and see what you have to go and collect.
5) learn how to ride it and love it.

ive had four r1s and k5 k71000 if I had a choice will be k51000 that bike has it all got a zx12r now

Just to interject with a question - has the OP ridden a modern litre sports bike before? Reading that post it wouldn't appear so, though I may be wrong. Hope he likes hospital food.....

Always going to be a subjective matter depending on who you're talking to but I've owned a few bikes and currently own the K6 GSX-R1000! This is the best bike I've ever owned period. It won the Superbike championship for good reason and the bike BMW took as the standard to beat when blueprinting the S1000RR. Go figure! Arm wrenching torque in every gear and handling to match with the weight and size of a 600! Seat height is most suitable for 5' 9" height! The Yamaha R1 is also a formidable bike and If I had one would be happy with that also! Both are excellent and very subjective on what you want! I chose the Suzuki and and have no regrets!

Must of been beer involved with the Triumph then?

R1 over priced get a 04 plate for that

Must of been beer involved with the Triumph then?

Nothing wrong with the Trumpet. Had to comprimise. And it will stay with most in the twisties in the right hands.
