The rear tyre on my bike has squared off quite a lot but tread wise is still ok. Do I need to replace it or is it still ok to use? If replacement is needed what would you reccommend. Bike used most days for commuting and all year round so wanted something with decent grip but that will also last for a reasonable amount of time. Also will it make any difference to change the rear tyre to a different make to the front. Currently got Bridgestone Battlax B012f on front and back and was thinking possibly replacing the back (if it needs replacing) with Michelin pilot road 3. Any advise/opions welcome.

I'd carry on a wear the old one out personally. Doubt you'd feel too much benefit this time of year (handling wise) from a new tyre especially as you're squaring them off. Personally I don't worry about mixing tyres. Your bike will feel different regardless when you fit a new / different tyre and you'll adjust to it the same regardless. Best to have a grippier one up front though. PR3's are an excellent choice if you're riding all year round in soggy weather and you'll get some decent mileage out of them too. Pilot Power 3's are worth a look too with someone reporting they got 8000 + miles out of their rear PP3, so excellent mileage if you wanted something sportier.

Don't forget to check tyre pressures

Been down to my local tyre place this morning and he advised running the tyre tread down more before replacing as if I change it now bearing in mind the time of year and commuting daily it will just happen again. Might leave it till summer then have another look at it. Got the pressures done while I was there.
