Multi-bike insurance recommendations.

Post by Robbo87 »

Now I'm the proud possessor of an extra 125 cc's in the shape of an '09 Chink trailie, I was wondering what you folks with many bikes in your garage do in the shape of multi-bike insurance? Or do you insure them separately? I'm with Bikesure for my Triumph but before I contact them I would like to know what others have used.

I use a multi bike policy and been with all of the big bike insurance brokers. Generally they are all as shit as one another and trade in snake oil.

For that Bike, even with a new policy and zero no claims you're probably only looking at £30 to insure it Phil. I wouldn't bother with a multibike.

I've only recently converted one of my stand alone policies into a multi-bike one (through Bikesure) as it was just £3 extra to stick new bike on.
I still have 3 separate policies running though as you can trapped into a crap deals with multi-bike cover as you only get one NCD so you have to take whatever they give you.

For my DRZ it makes no difference in price whether I use the NCD or not, but it is nice that I effectively have a spare NCD building in the background to use if I ever lost one of the others.

Also some underwriters are very bike type specific, so it could actually cost more to add that bike to an existing policy than would be to start a fresh one.

I'd insure it separately. I had 3 bikes on a multi-bike policy, including my BMW K1300S. When I replaced the BMW with my newer KTM SD GT, they wouldn't put that on the Multi-Bike. Ended up having to insure it on it's own, with no NCD, which was massively expensive. Especially annoying as I'd had separate policies in the past, with 2 lots of NCD, but that had lapsed. Separate policies gives you the flexibility, and will probably be cheaper in the long run.
I'm not really grumpy, just misunderstood

It's a right pain isn't it... sometimes it's cheaper for me to insure all 3 of mine together, sometimes it's cheaper if I insure the ccm604 separately.... snake oil, spot on.

Ive been with the same company for several years now, and in that time they've been bought out/sold twice!! The current owners are Adrian Flux ..... not a company I'd go to by choice, but unfairness they seem reasonable. The policy is on one bike (the TL) with the MV as an additional.

Thanks for all the comments and observations folks, valuable info' and much appreciated.
There's no discernable bias for either multi-bike or to insure separately it seems, most seem to have had experience of both, so with that in mind I'll spend some serious time looking around and see what fits my requirements. Judged on your comments I have a leaning towards a separate policy, partly because I don't much fancy a shared NCD situation if I'm honest.
When I'm fixed up I'll let y'all know.
