SO YOUR BIKE WON'T START EH!!

no couldn't get it to bump start - which i'm still not happy about.
But i'm not letting that distract me from following a logical fault finding plan. The fact is i took my multimeter and proved that when you press the starter button you get 12V at the starter motor but it doesn't spin. Even with the starter motor removed from the bike it doesn't operate when connected straight to a battery.

wierd that it still wouldnt bump but i'm sure your logical approach will fathom it out andy

were you getting continuity through the starter? (when the brushes were touching the commutater, natch). also did you try twatting it
no really, used to have to occasionally on my golf cos the starter occasionally jammed

ok say all is not good on the bike front, andrew and i dropped the engine out as he noticed that one of the valves is not moving, he got it home and he has since stripping it down he has told me some bad news that 2 valves are bent and now i am going to cry
but hey is a living legend and he is still in the frame of mind of trying to fix it, but has told me all could be lost, damaged and all sorts of horrible things, so you wont see me on a ride out for a while

I have the "click" but nothing, battery is holding its charge, still clicks with a slave and an overnight charge, had the battery tested and it is ok. would it be safe to assume the starter or solinoid is goosed. The bike had been standing for a while, it turned over initially, but went dead apart from the clicking from the solinoid, reading the Haynes manual and going through the sequence of fault checks, it seems to lead to the solinoid and starter.
The bike is a 89 gpx600r " G" plate

well georgie ds bike is coming along lovely I have taken the cylinder head off and have removed the 2 buggered inlet valves and two broken springs. Doesn't appear to be any other damage to the engine but we will replace the valve guides as well. Should have him back on the road soon.
Aidy i would say that if you are certain the battery is fine (best way to make sure its not that is to try jump starting the bike off a car). then its almost definatey your solenoid or starter motor. If the solenoid is clicking then its probably ok but you would need to do some checks with a multimeter to be certain. Where abouts do u live? i'm always happy to lend a hand.
