Glad to hear it, its not their only problem.

Hornet is a really nice bike, I didn't realise AT was restricted. Come to that Losty moves his restricted SV around pretty fast at times.

SV is a good restricted bike, It only makes 65-70BHP so you get to use more of the rev range plus it has good torque and pulls from lower down, unlike sports bike which only start moving above 10k rpm (well after the restrictions cut in) Shame they're so bloody ugly though

Sports 400's are fine restriction too, but it does suck away the lovely topend rush. You could always get a Busa and ride around on idle

I think that a 400cc sports bike is a better option in my opinion. I nearly brought a brand new SV650S at £4000, nice looking bikes I guess, but too rich for my blood at 17. I then looked around at all of the 400's and went for the ZXR400. Its the quickest of all the 400's (quote taken from bike magazine, so dont all you NC30 and GK76 riders start on me!)

It also looks the most modern, the ZXR400L model is the better model, and ranges from late 1990 all the way to 2003. Its the easiest too work on, things WILL go wrong. If you want any ZXR400 information, PM me, I have tonnes of information about buying the right one.

I went through a dealer and brought the 33bhp kit for it at £120, and pulled it back out again before riding home. I've never riden the kit in, its a dodgy way to go, and everyone will tell you to stay legal, but ride sensible and you'll be fine.

Also, when you go to take your test.. and the examiner asks you what bike you're going to buy, DONT TELL HIM ITS A RESTRICTED SPORTS BIKE!! Examiners dont like youngsters on fast bikes.. tell him you havent made up your mind, or say you want to ride a 125cc without L plates or something.

i'd agree with almost all of that, except that its the most modern looking, it's got a back end thats been cut n pasted out of the 80's. I definatly think 400's are the way to go. I would however take cbt first and get used to bikes and the road before making the jump. also i dont think leaving the restrictors in is a bad idea. Two of my friends didn't bother and i keep up with them off the lights and through the twistys, plus i dont have to shit myself everytime i see a police car.

I'd say go for something like a GS500 but you'd be bored with it in a years time. Maybe a Bandit 600 restricted?

Depends how confident you are? I rode a manual 50cc for a year, then took my test the day after my 17th birthday so I could use the training centre's bike, and passed first time in the wind and rain, nearly got cancelled.. but managed to persuade the instructor to ask the examiner to take me out. I looking to take the next step up too 900cc, but being wise I need to wait till my restriction is up.. then I'll have 3 years no claims too

..

Its up to you.. I personally feel that you'll have more fun on a sports bike, and the ladies look more..

.. however insurance is more expensive and you will attract more attenton..
