Can understand wanting to go to Santander - we did that a couple of years ago and the waterproofs were never used, even changed out of leathers into jeans whilst waiting to board the ferry on the way back.

Did Roscoff last July & traveled up to Calais via the war graves & museums - very interesting and recommended but even though we went in July (by car) we had several cold & wet days, in fact shorts were never worn!!

You need to find a friendly trucker with space in the back of his lorry for a bike heading for Santander or Bilbao

I'd reccommend Portsmouth to Caen or Le Harve. I never fancy the hack in Blighty to the tunnel. 4 hours or so sailing means a bit of rest time without the prices of cabins etc.

I've done most of the way doen to Le Mans and some nice roads to enjoy. Next time I will take sat nav though, as stopped huge number of times for map read mainly down to loads of junction signs only offering towns I'd not heard of before. Weather will keep you guessing a bit any time of year.

Caen is good. You get off at what's basically a little seaside town, not some big port that takes years to get out of. Caen is a few miles away from it.

In October we did Torbay – Poole – Cherbourg – Le Mans – Bois – Montlucon – Volvic – Montlucon – Mayenne – Mont Saint Michel – Genets – Granville – Portbail – Cherbourg – Torbay nearly all on N roads (equivalent to B roads UK) and loads of detours and stops in between each in 5 days and with a total cost of £500 each. That was two riders with a bike each and the £500 included everything, we booked it all Sunday evening and left Monday morning………………….it was fantastic!!!

As you can see you don’t have to spend loads or do silly miles each day, we enjoyed it so much we’re off again in late March or April. Hope you have a good trip.

That sounds like a top tip as they want me to give them £85 each way for a two berth internal cabin in September
