He's the boss? In that case, as advised get a solicitor experienced in speeding cases. Dress smart, act contrite, etc., etc., .....
The solicitor needs to wax lyrical about how it was a moment of madness, he's usually very sensible, his business and his employees rely on him and his licence, etc., for their well being .... it's not unknown for people in such circumstances to escape a ban, although as has been said there is an argument that says a ban would involve less stress over the next three years ....
One would think a "totting up" ban would have a greater effect on insurance, as it represents persistent bad behaviour rather than a single act of madness?
Sadly, sh*t happens.

He's done a bit more digging and thinks £450 is the typical fee a solicitor would charge to represent him.
We also think a ban is likely (and desirable) so the only benefit a solicitor could bring is reducing the length, is it worth it?
For arguments sake, 4 weeks verses 2-3 weeks, for £450.. but this is not guaranteed, the solicitor may achieve no improvement.
The fine is going to be the max allowable as he is well paid, so I can't see a solicitor affective that.
He doesn't need a vehicle to do his job (for the most part), just to get to his job, the loss of a license will impact on his family more.
I think he's going represent himself, make case for why it happened, as in it not being a normal event, and then hope for the best.
1 more question - how long does this all take?
The court case might not be heard until winter I guess.

And if his insurance renewal comes up before the court case he should declare it as pending and get hit by the insurers who'll presume guilt

Apparently not... you only need to notify once the outcome is known. eg points or disqualification. At the moment it is just an intention to prosecute, and we are all innocent until proven guilty.

Most policy renewal documents or quote searches I've seen state you must notify of pending prosecutions. Failure to answer questions/meet terms & conditions renders insurance void ......

Unfortunately insurers presume guilt until proven innocent......

Well, he had just renewed it seems so he's gonna have a close read through the T&C's.

If he renewed prior to getting the letter he's ok. It's only if he arranged a quote or renewed in the knowledge of a pending prosecution there might be an issue?

Well.. I guess this thread should go quiet now.
He's decided what action to take, is gonna sign the form to say that he was riding at the time and send it back today, and then await the court I suppose.
I'll update this thread when the outcome is known.
Thanks for all of your suggestions, and for not being judgmental arses as has happened on another forum I frequent..
