Oh yeah, diagnosed within a day - broken wire in the side stand switch. They're on back order and not available for another week or two. They offered to try to repair the wire short term but I've still not had a call to say they've done it

I did wonder if that was what it was.
I have recently made up an a couple override plugs (for my 990 & 1190 as they use the same plug) and put it in their respective tool kits for 'just in case'. I can't think of anything more annoying than having your bike disabled because of a side stand switch, and you can't just short the wires together like on older bikes.

Please indulge an old elektrickery nerd such as I and inform why a 1k ohm resistor is needed between the two connectors. I didn't need this when I by-passed the sidestand switch on my Aprilia.

Bilko1000 - I'm really sorry about this as it's turning into a full on hijacking of your thread.
For example the road variants of the DRZ400 (S/SM) have a basic ECU so with that you just needed to short the wires to fool it.
Then the next level got smarter and the ECU wanted to be able to determine between broken (either shorted or open) and working, so the only valid signal is approx 1K ohm. Much lower and it assumes the wires have been damaged and are now shorted, and open circuit means the stand is down or it has been disconnected.
I think the very latest bikes now have a CAN bus module down on the stand, so if you want to override that you'll need to buy a plug in module to spoof it.
It all depends how new the bike is and how involved its ECU is.
