I have carried out some 'modifications' to my beloved blade.

As you can see I have drastically shortened the wheelbase amongst other things............

All joking aside I was quite lucky to escape without serious injury, although I am very sore. Did it on cold tyres less than 1 mile from home last Friday. Hit an embankement at approx 60mph.

I know the whole gear nazis thread has been done to death, but my kit really did save me, especially my back protector when I hit the curb square across my back. I was only nipping out to the bank aswell at the time

Glad to hear you are OK. 8)

Is the fact tht the bike is parked next to a skip an indication of its impending doom :D

I had to pop into town to get some money, and as it was a fairly nice dry day I thought I'd take the bike. I left the village where I live and turned onto the B3227 towards Taunton, It's a national limit stretch of road which runs all the way out through Bampton and onto South Molton, A great bit of road that I ride very often.

Anyway, I left the roadabout and went along the first stretch which is about 200yds, then round a 90 degree left hander which leads into a gentle right. I made the left hander no problem, but as soon as I began to lean into the right hander the front just let go. It felt as if it didn't even try to go round, I leant in and the whole lot just hit the deck. No warning twitches or wobbles or anything, just straight down very hard. The bike and I hit the road approx 10 feet before the embankment and then slid staright into it. The bike did at least 2 flips as it went down on the right, then flipped and hit the road on the left, hence the missing generator cover, then flipped again and ended up on the right hand side.

I bounced out of the embankment and slid up the road, ending when my back hit the curb on the opposite side of the road further up the hill. Luckily there was nothing coming the other way at the time.

My Arlen Ness Kangaroo suit looks pretty badly scuffed, although there are no holes, it held together perfectly. I'm still in a great deal of pain through musclular damage, my back and chest hurt like hell, and breathing is also painful at times due to bruised lungs and other organ bruising. The copper who turned up at the scene was amazed that I was even alive let alone walking around, and the doctors at Musgrove - who I have to say were absolutely fantastic - were also amazed at the lack of broken bones and skin abrasions etc.

I think my worst two injuries occurred when my chest hit the fuel tank as the bike and I hit the embankment, and when my back hit the curb. I also hurt my left hand very badly, I guess I might have still been holding onto the Left bar when it got snapped off the bike

End of the day I escaped with remarkably few injuries and consider myself very lucky. What bothers me is that I still don't really understand why it happened, I have ridden that peice of road more times than I came remember, and I have been using the same model of tyre for about 5 years, they are very grippy 'RR' compound and have never let go before at all, I just don't get it. Ho Hum

First of all, glad you escaped relatively unscathed ......

Go back and have a good look at the road surface, perhaps there was something on it that you hadn't noticed?

Does the new job come with a company bike :?

glad you are ok, does sound like a big off, i had the same thing happen to me this time last year (conditions, not result), around town took a right hander, both wheels come out from under me, wasnt going very fast, 10 or so mph, but the fact i went straight up to straight down left me with some silly bruising

still cant recall what happened at the time, people always say diesel or ice

sounds like your suit did its job very well, which is a good testimonial as some alren ness is at the top of my wish list for next year :) hope you get well soon
