What's your next bike? And are sports bikes less for the rd?

Post by Mike Daytona600 »

I've always had bikes that I'd like to buy next, even if I haven't because of money or age.

However, since I've had the Daytona I'm not sure. The Daytona does all I want although because I do a lot of two up riding I could do with more power.

I'm not gonna change bikes for another year or so but thought would put this up to see what others dream bikes are, or if like me you've already got it.

I love sports bikes but here's the problems with new sports bikes.
 No under seat storage to speak of. Bike companies should be helping with security, so where do you put the disc lock.

 Rider seats high. I'm just uder 5'6"

 Pillion seat to high. Mels short too.

 Pillion seat too high compeared to riders seat so pillion is stuck in the wind.

 Pillion pegs too high so pillion is all squished up.

I know what your thinking, sports bikes aren't for pillions, their for track racing. Rubbish. GP bikes are for track racing, sports bikes are for the road. They tamed the ZX10 because it was too much for the road. And they give you a pillion pad. Why should I not be able to take pillions because I like sports bikes.

For these reasons I don't know what to get next. I was an R1 untill the mrs sat on one at exel.

What do you think folks. Have you got a bike under 3 years old with decent space for a lock? How do you get on with pillions? And what is your dream bike?

i have more storage under my seat on a new bike than my old bike, only problem being, I wouldnt put my disc lock under my seat on the new bike in fear of smashing my power commander to bits!
Ok so i havent owned any of the bikes you mentioned, but thought I would say there is ample room for a disc lock under my seat!

I have plenty of underseat storage on my '99 r6 and sophie is comfortable on the back (even though people say she is brave going on the back of an r6)

My Sports touring GSXF has space for disk lock and a rear chain and lock. but thats about it.
Comfy on the front and the back and quick enough with 2 up for a 750.
I,m 6'3" nearly but again, what modern sports bikes are that big ? The ones i,ve seen appear tiny :?

Well as long as they have lights and are road registered as far as i am concerned they are road bikes for pissing about on the roads.

Im glad they have useless pillion capabilities - its a good excuse not to carry passengers, I strip the rear pegs of my bikes anyway. I hate carrying pillions.

the underseat space thing is a pain - you can get basically nothing under the seat hump on my k6...but rather that than a big ugly looking rear end I guess.

and do you need a touring bike to tour?...no way, its miles more fun on a sportsbike...we did 3300 miles and 9 countries in 11 days

proper touring bikes somewhere on the edge of lake como in italy 8) (wearing crappy standard cans due to nurburgring noise limits)

what bike will I get next, well my last five have been gsxr's so theres a slight clue, when they make a bike that suits me better I will buy it, but until then for me the only bikes worth buying have gsxr written on the side of them.

Jase I heard some good storys about you the other day ;)

And got to agree, carrying pillions does suck and my current bike has no pillion pegs but I am getting moaned at to take some people out, but I really cant be bothered to change my exhaust bracket and put the pegs back on, just for some girl to cry it was too fast?

I already have my dream bike :)
Storage is ample on the VTR, there's a U lock under the seat, although it can be a bit fiddly getting it in/out, but once it's in & strapped down it stays put.
Don't have the problem of taking a pillion, although there isn't a grab rail, the seat/pad looks quite comfy considering.

If money was no object, or those 6 numbers came up on a Saturday evening, I'd get me a RC30 or RC45.

sorry mike but you'll never get what you want on a new sportsbike, as you should know its all about selling off race track success so theyre all designed small and mass centralised and not suited for pillions.

if you want a low rider with storage and pillion capablitles with power for 2 you'll need a harley v rod or triumph rocket.

the daytona should have enough power for 2 up riding as you can only stick to 70 ( yeah right ) and should always ride with more respect when carrying 2 up, balls out riding is for on your own not with the wife on board mate

my advice would be to get mel her own bike so you can both have fun but make sure you get your zx10 first and she has your old daytona that you can then use on trackdays

Mine is 2 years old, massive space under the seat and more under the tail piece, good seat for pillions and I've fitted pillion peg extenders so they are a bit lower than std, and it's my dream bike.

What can it be, the perfect bike that ticks all the boxes?

ZRX1200R

And it will be for sale soon.

Do you buy a bike for you or them? I buy a bike for me, if they want one, they can buy one. I could take someone on the back but do not want to be responsible for killing them and injuring myself should some tw@t pull out on me. You asked!

I have a VFR400 NC30 and first thing I did to it was take the pillion footpegs off and insure myself to take no pillions.

My bike is fast enough for me and the purpose I use it for. I don't race CBR1000RR's on the road so getting an R1 is pointless. I'd buy either a new R6 (red and white) for my next bike or a red 748 Biposto, just because I think they look the nuts. The new R1 looks even better but the power would be way too much for me.

As for disc locks, don't they fit in a jacket pocket?! I find a partially stuffed rucksack with my chain lock inside it gives me good corner stability on the 400 due to me being a straw weight!

I used to chop the pillion option of my insurance as another excuse not to take pillions but it got to a point where it wasnt saving me any money and I thought one day I might need to help someone out in an emergency and give a lift so I reinstated it.

mind you if I do ever give that emergency lift they will be sitting on a slippery plastic seat cowl, with their legs dangling in mid air...they had better hope its a short journey :D
