As has been said, its about freedom of choice. Once you take away that choice, you're heading towards a Big Brother style controlled society.
Me personally, I always wear bike boots, gloves and an armoured bike jacket and obviously a helmet. If I know I'm going to be out on a quick one, I will get leathered up.
On the subject of back protectors. I do have one but I never use it. I find it restricts my vision and head movement (its also very tight in my leathers. Must start that diet soon). I find them a bit OTT for the road. This isn't to say they aren't a good idea, just that I need to find a better one to suit me.!

really makes you think, im only 18 but previously have only ridden in an armoured jacket, gloves and a lid (obviously). when i upgraded to my gixxer 6 i invested in leather trousers, higher quality gloves and helmet and some boots. not only am i a lot more protected this also has given more more confidence on the road too.

If you ride a decent sports bike, which is anything from 400 up, and don't wear the full kit when you go out for a fast ride then your a fool to you and your family.
I wear a back protector when I wear my leathers. It is a little uncomfortable but I expect wheel chairs can get a bit annoying after a while.
If I'm just shooting round to see some mates or off to Bridge for a burger then it's boots, draggin jeans and a bike jacket with CE armour. Gloves and lid are always worn.
We are not like frogs. Bits don't grow back if we lose them. And knowing that bone will wear down at 1cm a second when you rub it against tarmac at over 60mph certainly makes you think about your kit a bit more.
I don't know about you but I'm doing more than 60 for a majority of the time when I'm riding.
Please people. get decent gear and wear it. It's no use having the kit at home when you fall off..

Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you on experience.
