My bike keeps cutting out,"please help"

Post by littlehead »

Hi All

This is the 1st time I've used any type of forum, so go easy on me.

This time last year I bought a new FZ6 Fazer and have used it every day since to travel to work and back during the week and touring at the weekends. When the bike hit about 3-3500 Miles it started to periodicly cut out for a split second once every 7 days or so.

As this was so irregular, I thought it was not worth bothering my dealer with. As time went on it became a more regular feature of my journey to work until it was happening every other day and cutting out for longer and longer periods of time to the point that I had to pull over to the side of the road, only for it to start up agian as I came to a stop just as I pulled my clutch in (in other words I was bump starting the engine back into life, but i'm sure you all worked that out). It was starting to become dangerous, as it would cut out as I was just about to overtake one of those funny 4 wheeled blocks of metal that clog up our raods or when I was using to power to keep me steady whilst cornering and so on.

It was then I decided to take the bike back to the dealer who did all the test that needed doing, they said that they couldn't find any problems with the bike, but didn't deny that there may be a problem.

Due to an experience they had had with an R1 of the same age they said they would change an item that was connected to the throttle control ( I forget the correct name of the part) during the following weeks I took the bike to work to find that it was still doing the same thing and is getting increasingly worse.

Has anybody else had this experience or does anybody no what my problem is?

Any help would be much appriciated. I've not yet taken the bike back to my dealer and I'm not suggesting that they're not capable of finding the fault, but due to the way in which they scratched their heads when I describe the problem to them I think it will be a while before they find the cure. So if I can goto them with some suggestions, then it can only help.

Sorry this is so long winded!

It could be so many things from a knick in the wiring loom causing a short, to a coil on it's way out. The list could go on so if it's intermitent I'm not supprised the dealer have had trouble finding it.

I expact the part your on about is the TPS (throttle position sensor). Yammaha did a recal on some of them.

Sorry can't really help and welcome to SWB.

Thanks for that Mike Daytona600.

I know it's going to be a hard one to find, I almost feel sorry for my dealer having to locate it. The last time they had the bike in, they used half a tank of fuel trying to get it to happen ( Bit of a nice jolly for the fitter I suppose as it was a nice day) but of course it did'nt happen. The problem is that I use the bike every day of the week and it has on occasions nearly had me off, it always seems to happen at the most inappropriate times!

Thanks again mate. :D

thats what the dealers are for. as u r up brizzle way i would say give fowlers a ring, they will know if there have been any other problems like this or if any recalls have taken place.

coil breaking down does sound in the right direction but with electrics u can be chasing your tail all day and get nowhere.

It's a new bike, you've got a warranty, it's their problem. 8)

Be grateful it's not a secondhand "sold as seen" deal :D

Thanks all for your replies.

I dont have any probs with my dealer and I do have complete faith in them, they have had many years of experiance. But I asure you I will push untill they get it right. I think that i will put the seed into their heads about the coil though.

To Smiler I work in Highbridge and travel there from W-s-M every day on my bike, you wouldn't be one of the many bikers I see going in the oppersite direction every morning is it.

Thanks again all.

I once spent about £130 only to find out my cutting-out was caused by vapour lock.

More often than not, its the stupidest little things

Eliminate the vapour lock theory by riding (carefully) with the filler cap undone (Doesn't need to be right open, just not sealed). I'd recommend a quiet ride near home on a weekend so you don't get bogged down by traffic and can concentrate since you'll have fuel p***ing out if you come off!!!

Is it restricted?

Have you changed the exhaust can?

Has it had the air filter cleaned in it's service?

Is it a wet problem or does it happen in dry weather too?
WTF? Me? Never...Well, .... Maybe, but ME?

Hi Abwill

Thanks for your reply.

I will try the fuel tank cap thoery tomorrow on my way to work, should be quiet on a Saturday morning.

Is it restricted? No

Have you changed the exhaust can? No

Has it had the air filter cleaned in it's service? service is due next month, but would assume that my agent checked that when I took it into them.

Is it a wet problem or does it happen in dry weather too? I happens wet, dry, cold, warm at any time or how ever hot or cold the engine is, going into corners, coming out of corners, on the motorway doing what ever speed you like, it has even done it at 120mph (that was scary) I thought that giving it a blast might help, you know push the fuel through as quick as possible.

I have to go away for a week on Tuesday so the dealer is going to have it then to hopefully sort it out. I will tell them what you and other people have suggested, it might help them with a bit of luck!!

Cheers Littlehead.
