Sometimes I tut at bikers who wear jeans, only to realise that I'm wearing jeans also  I would never wear anyless than decent jacket, proper boots, gloves, helmet etc but I do wear jeans when I'm out and about.

My advise would be to hit something solid, stops any road rash dead :)

Tom L. Who is to say that's a motorcycle accident abrasion injury?

Let's be fair about this debate.

when i was teaching, the dsa stated it was a inch of flesh a second at 30mph and it would take approx 5 secs to stop, now measure the palm of your hand and see how much flesh you'd have left ?

that stat is enough to make me wear good gear on a bike at all times

I wonder how creative some of these stats are. Cause i slid down the road at about 30mph in unadequate clothing. School Trousers and waterproofs over the top and the only point in contact with the ground was my knee. Now i dont know how long it was touching the ground for exactly but it was a good few seconds so the trousers may of lasted a millisecond as we all know how fast you destroyed trouser knee's playing football at primary school. And i still have a kneecap and big piece of scar tissue on my knee.....
But still the top half of me wearing a decent jacket was uninjured so needless to say the right gear is worth it and especially in the summer when there are more idiots about in cars who are paying less attention cause there hot and sweaty cars playing with their aircon. But its all down to personal choice and yes i still do go out in my jeans and jacket somedays because its my choice and if i suffer due to my choices then so be it.

BLOODY HELL  I don't beleive it Jason. Surely leathers would restrict your movement too much - i know how vital standing up is to your riding style

Yeh... crap stats...

Leroy travelled over 100 metres at over 70mph on his side etc in just shirt, tie and trousers.

According to those stats he should be down to the marrow, plenty of skin graze but no bone damage... :|

just read all this... i have been riding for over 20 yrs, never owned a pair of leather trousers,,can't afford em.. come off loads and yes it hurts but never had gravel rash,, wear what you want, when you want, but don't start dictating what others should wear,, some of you older people, who paid any interest, may remember that the goverment wanted to introduce safety wear, therefore no more colour coordinated leathers,, only what the goverment deem is safe..i ride in whatever i feel like that day, but I don't judge others, I don't wear flip flops cos they hurt your toes when you change gear...if i had a choice i wouldn't wear a helmet, but remember we all ride different bikes too, and some of us know that the throttle can be turned to slow instead of stop and stoopid fast...some states in america are helmet free but you have to have an insurance policy of a million dollars !!!! and if you don't know the benefits of riding without a helmet then personally i think you shouldn't be riding.. But remember fols,, this is only my opinion !!!! Bludy hell we'll be back to leg protectors next and airbags for bikes..all been tested by the safety people already...

with the minimum of gravel rash. Loads of scares from being pinned together mind
