pop up blockers and virus scanners etc

following on fom my other thread,i was just windering what security everyone here uses on their computes such as pop up blockers,firewalls, virus scanners etc etc

I've run AVG for years, ever since a previous PC cost me a lot of photos when it got infected, and not any problems since

Adaware is a pop-up blocker others have mentioned to me, but i just use the windows firewall and pop-up blocker and it seems to do the trick for the sites I visit

yep avg for me too,dont get the hassle that the wife gets with her paid for norton crap

I used to use AVG for years and it is fine for general surfing but if you use file sharing sites or your kids go on any of the sites that kids go on to download ringtones or music or if you indulge in visiting certain adult sites that can be full of viruses or ip loggers and the attacks on your PC will be more than AVG can handle. I know this is the case because i put AVG on my missus laptop and the kids use that as i dont let them anywhere near mine and it gets riddled with spyware that the popular programs miss on a scan such as adaware, spybot search and destroy, adware away etc. At the end of the day its free so Norton who bought AVG a couple of years ago arent going to give you a free top notch antivirus solution or why would you spend £30 or £40 for a year on their own program. In the end i settled it by doing a scan with AVG and it picked up 5 various worms and trojans then i did a scan with Nortons free online scan and that found 6, so i then did a scan with Panda's free online scan and it found 7 so i went with Panda which includes antivirus and firewall in one and three licences for 3 PC's for £30 a year (get together with your m8's and have one each) and unlike Norton doesnt attempt to take over your PC and clog it up with so many operations it slows down to nothing, Norton really does have a bad reputation for this and can be a real b*stard to remove from your PC, you actually have to download a Norton removal tool to get rid of it completely.

Run them both, it might surprise you

For free firewalls you cant go wrong with this one from sygate: http://downloads.cnet.co.uk/0,39100207,39220044s,00.htm and is a bit easier to use than the other popular one from zone alarm

yep i use zonealarm free firewall rather than the windows nonsense and my anti-virus is courtesy of my brothers company and is network associates/mcafee business version

I use AVG for anti virus and Ad-Aware 2008 for anti-spyware, both these are free to use. Never had a days problem since i've been using them. I also had Spybot, but the new version was pain in the arse, so i don't use it any more.

I use Norton 360. Seems to work fine. Had too many problems with AVG . Used to have 3 computers in the house so norton covered all 3. Only problem I have is that the laptop locks up but it did this before I loaded Norton so I dont think thats the problem as it does it on boot up as well as surfing, hence i'm gonna have toget a new one
