Advice please!

Post by Sirona »

Advice needed for a newbie please! You may have seen me pop up on the Introduce yourself bit. Looking for my first bike now and seen so many that I all I can see is bikes when I close my eyes! Not a bad thing! Anyway, can only get a 125cc whilst I'm waiting for my Direct Access (pants) and so am a bit limited. But want to get on the road in the meantime, have never been a patient person! I find myself leaning towards the YBR125 and just want to get peoples opinions on it (if they have any), is it any good for a first time bike? Any problems with it? Have done all my lessons so far on 500cc+ so sitting on a YBR today was a new experience, felt really light and so much less substantial. But as I said, dont want to wait. Guy in the shop was really good, brand new price £1750 OTR. Available now. And will give me excellent trade in price after passing test, anything up to £1400 depending on mileage. So it would get me on the road and getting experience and as lessons are £25 an hour, the money I lose on it will only be equivalent to about 14 lessons, and I would certainly be using the YBR for more than 14 hours! So what does everyone reckon? A good buy or wait? (Bear in mind it is impossible to get tests at the moment and so could be preparing for DAS for ages.....)

id personally get something cheap but good to learn on until you pass your test. you can pick up a cg125 for £500 and then sell it on for £500 once your test is done! you wont loose any money and youll be gaining experience on the road aswell as cheap insurance and a bullet proof little engine!

Hi watters

Been looking around and there is so little available in the 125cc range second hand, even Bike Trader is a little bare at the moment. And not one bike in the local paper this week! I've put the word around and no-one seems to know anyone with one to sell either, guess there has been a lot sold recently due to the test change coming up soon, I dont know. I did see a CG125 today but must admit I didnt like it, took one look at it and thought... backache! Prefer the more upright YBR. I dont mind spending the money if I get a decent trade in price. :D

i'd be tempted to try to find something cheap privately personally, just as you aren't held to one dealer who wil offer an above-value trade-in as and when you want to upgrade. plus, if the worst happens and you drop it you aren't going to lose loads on it.worth looking on The Sun website classifieds as they search a number of different classifieds sites in one go

pick up a copy of free ads or something similar, there are always litle bikes in there.

instead of thinking about going out and getting something fancy, just think of it like you are going out looking for your first girlfriend/boyfriend - they dont have to be pretty or sporty, just a good fun ride to get your practice in on as you won't be keeping them long

i was in the same position about a month before i was 17. i didnt no whether to spend the money i had on a 50cc now or wait a month and get a 125. so what i did was find a 50cc that i could get most of my money back on and then when i turned 17, screwed the 125 and am now doing A2 and getting my money back for a 600 and lessons etc.

so my advice would be if your gonna buy a bike before you do your direct access, then either get one that u can just destroy and keep hold of your money,, or go the hole way and buy a descent 125 that you can get your money back on? Or an easier way...rent 1 in the meantime ;)

I'd be surprised if you got backache on a CG

Bought one about a month back for £500, 24000 miles 1995, well looked after and serviced all its life. Crashed it 6 days later

Like has been said, buy 2nd hand, wish I did when I bought my first 125 as lost alot of money on it really for the amount of time I had it.
