The foam shouldnt pull the paint off, but if your not happy with going down the pulling route, get a standard knife (one you eat your dinner with, not a sharp one) or palette knife or filling knife, you get the idea, even a old cd would work and just push it through the foam pad, itll tear or squash the pad and bring the plate off, the reason NOT to use a sharp knife, if you slip, youll cut yourself, the tip will most likely touch with the paint and scratch it or if you use the knife in a forward backward cutting motion youll probably cut into the paint, or induce score/rub marks. The plastic fitting kit you need (yellow screws) to be within the law are available at wentins fasteners for about 10p each. Now, get a drill bit suitable for metal/plastic (standard jobber or titanium drill bit will do, I have some) drill into the yellow area of the plate with a drill bit the same size diameter as the bolt (try to make it level) now grab a felt pen, permanent marker or the like and then put the plate where you want it to be, put the tip of the pen through the hole you just drilled in the plate, and now you will have marked your bolt holes. Then use a centre punch (again I have one of those) and use it to put an indentation in the surface, this acts like a pilot hole and significantly reduces the chances of the drill shimmying around on the surface (a bit like that zoo magazine where the woman is doing some drilling on the wall and the drill runs all over the wall.) Now begin drilling, try to go slow until the drill is biting well or do bursts. When you dont need to force the drill, just push with an adequate amount of presure, BE CAREFUL, you dont know whats on the other side of the area your drilling into, could be radiator pipes, the radiator, wiring etc, so when you feel the drill cut through itll not have any resistance stopping the drill from moving forward, at that point stop pushing and wait for the drill to slow down or stop before pulling out, repeat for other mark. p, Slide bolts through plate holes, then into the the bumper and fasten with a nut and washer
You want the components in following order
Bolt> Plate> 3 Nylon Washers> Mounting surface> 1 Nylon Washer> 2 Plastic Nuts (this is per mounting not for the whole job, ie you want double the amount of components listed )

No, but since your too stupid to know how to get a piece of sticky foam off I thought Id do my best to tell you everything you would need to do. I guess thats my fault for not reading the disclaimer that says, 'Dont help me any more than I ask your to' which was a stupid mistake and Im really sorry for trying my best to help you out. Dont worry it wont happen again.

As for telling you something you dont need to know, well I class you as a complete idiot with regards to vehicle work since you dont even know how to change oil yet reckon youve race engineered a cossie, yeah whatever, so it was written as an idiots guide to changing a number plate, including all youd have to look out for, be aware of and do. Guess you better put up a thread asking about how to change oil since I aint doin it for ya. Wise up and stop being such a spoilt little shit.

Last time I checked, here in the UK our front number plates are white
I've always found it easier to put a bit of masking tape on the front (clear side) of the perspex and drill through to the rear - less likely to leave a rough edge on the front or tear the reflective backingJesta wrote: Now, get a drill bit suitable for metal/plastic (standard jobber or titanium drill bit will do, I have some) drill into the yellow area of the plate with a drill bit the same size diameter as the bolt ..........

Wow welldone, I dont have a car so I dont pay much attention to the colour of plates on cars.TLS-Moose wrote:Jesta wrote: ........... The plastic fitting kit you need (yellow screws) to be within the law are available at wentins fasteners for about 10p each...........

Well the masking tapes not at all necessary, and the masking tape wont stop it from leaving a rough edge, unless Ive missed the anti abrasion ability of crepe paper? It wont tear the reflective backing anyway since its laminated between two pieces of plastic. Neither would make any difference because it would be hidden behind a screw, unless they now check for roughness on the inside of mount holes during the car mot? Maybe worth getting a dremel polishing kit to clean up the rough inside, or even some 1200/2400 grit wet and dry, gluing it to a thing dowel or screw driver and then spinning it gently inside the holes.TLS-Moose wrote:

Again, excuse my lack of knowledge on mounting a number plate to a car, but either method is acceptable and foam pads are only used on cars in the last few years, many still use screws from what Ive noticed.TLS-Moose wrote: most car number plates are fixed with either double sided foam tape (which kinda negates all of the above![]()
) or self tapping screws, so the hole drilled through the bumper should be smaller in diameter than that in the number plate itself and the materials list you quote is completely wrong .........
![]()
self tapping screws arent legal and arent used, since they are metal and the screws used to fasten the plate have to be colour matched to the mounting area on the plate, otherwise it is counted as an attempt to alter the appearance or text of the number plate.
Since the self tapping screws cant be used then your point of smaller diameter etc is not a valid one, but either way the guide was to conform with the law and wouldve been even longer had I decided to include every other option of mounting device. Maybe you should put gripfill up there too and tell me I havent covered that point. or rivets, pop or dome? ally or steel? CSK Bolts, Button Bolts , Cap Bolts, Hex Bolts, Coach Bolts, Slot or Phillips Screws, Blu tak, White Tak, Chewing Gum, Wallpaper paste, Prit stick, UHU, Araldite etc etc etc etc etc. The drill hole would be the same size as the bolt as explained which if you used a self tapper, the hole would be the same size as the self tapper, Plastic screws dont tap plastic or metal very well at all so drilling it to the thread diameter is more ideal, plus by being the same size you wont get any movement of the bolt in the hole. How is the materials list wrong, Does the nut go on before the plate? Maybe its the washer I think your strife is, or maybe its just you being a pedantic dickhead whose just trying to pick faults with someone who actually TRIED to help by giving an extensive guide so someone wouldnt get stuck and end up calling me for help. I do think you dont agree with the washers, let me tell you why they are there, Theyres there to act as shims, notice on a car plate that the number stands away slightly from the bodywork, even with foam pads it stands clear by about 1-2mm, this is most likely to protect the paintwork from the ends of the number plate vibrating and scuffing the paint over the next 15 years of the cars life. Hell, I dont know the real reason but theres a reason they stand clear of the bodywork and so Id try to preserve that for whatever reason it is, its obviously a good one. So please since your such a smart arsed twat fill me in on what that reason is since your obviously a helpful chap though havent actually contributed to the question raised.

Re: Starting my own business
im sure i used to sell self tapping number plate screws that come in a nice little plastic sheaf with a pop down coloured lid to match the colour of the plate
for someone who proclaims to have never fitted a numberplate you sure have a lot to say on the matter
