In this months Ride mag, they went to a garage where they were asked to remove lid before starting fueling.
They went back in a full Elvis costume (white jump suit, big wig, big shades) and put fuel in a car with no questions, did it again in a santa outfit, again no questions asked.
So the "rule" that we need to remove lids for ID purposes is complete testicles. I bet they've never asked anyone to remove shades and a baseball hat or hoodie.
If they provided a shelf by the pump it would be something, but I still wouldn't take mine off, I would just go elsewhere.

bit of a note to all as i was in the petrol station (filling up car) on the outside of exeter on the way to a38/380 just after the devon hotel roundabout.
the one with all the hgv stuff next to it.
the owner was ranting on about how she hates motorcyclests not taking off there helmets and how she hates them and thay shoud not be on the road.
so i told her that i have a bike and will now go else where and will be filling my car and bike else where.
she replyed i dot care i dont want your trade.
nice.
service with a smile not!

Vote with your feet. The only place I have ever had an issue with over the matter I have never revisited since.

I keep my helmet on whilst filling up, though I never sit on the bike whilst filling, and it depends on my mood / rush as to whether I keep it on or take it off whilst paying.

The alternative is use a Tesco's, where you can just pay at the pump
I agree- use a garage that allows you to keep it on.

How ignorant is that! i cant understand how people with an attitude like that can ever run a succesfull business  Completly diffent i know but i am a delivery driver and i had some parcels for a pub recently and the guy got really upset when i wouldn't let him open the boxes until he had signed for them, he then went on to tell me to f*ck off out of his pub and never to go back again! really cant stand people with that sort of attitude!

I'd like to see them ask the Stig to remove his helmet...

If the garage is kind of empty, which it usually is at the silly times I use it, i'll hook my helmet on the handlebars/brake lever of my bike - sits there nicely.
The Jet garage just up the road from me know me and the bike by now so if I'm in a rush they won't mind me not taking it off. Most of the time at other garages I do just to avoid hassle... or to show the young female cashier how good looking I am... Yeah. 8)

Only been asked to take it off once, ignored them and handed over cash. And got me change and receipt....

Like the idea of scattering everything on the counter lol

If there are signs up and they refuse let you have petrol then its fair enough, its simple economics, and can I make it to the next petrol station.

Only once locally after I had filled up walked in to pay was I asked to take my helmet off, They started to say we won't let you pay otherwise..., I grinned at that and said with the £10 note in my hand are you sure you want to continue with this, I am offering to pay for goods recieved and your not accepting my money.... I don't mind free petrol but sure your boss will..... What I have noticed is it is more people with a axe to grind, why let you fill up and then ask....

I think maybe they have had some trouble at the Hele garage as its just round the corner from the big council estate so maybe they are a bit twitchy, i just use the Jet in KingKerswell or Sainsburys at Pen inn and no problems :)

I've never been asked to take my helmet off, if I do, where the hell do I put it when I'm paying? Trying to get wallet out of leathers, holding my gloves.. too much hassle..

Also, I almost always where a balaclava which completely covers my face (except for my eyes! )

Only once at Shell, Carland Cross the attendant called the police on me for being on my mobile phone, whilst standing outside of the shop, I was trying to get out of the wind and call the RAC as my bike broke down! :(
